Over recent decades, we have witnessed the consolidation of securitization as a framework for understanding state-led responses to migratory influxes, in particular focused on border impenetrability and territorial control. However, we have also seen growing tensions and contradictions between migration securitization practices on the ground, migration governance processes, and racialized regimes of capitalist production. This article highlights how the migration securitization literature often homogenizes and universalizes the relationship between security responses and borders, by bringing it into conversation with the literature on racial capitalism. We bridge this theoretical divide via a case study examination of Brazil’s “Operation Welcome” since 2018, which has worked to receive and resettle Venezuelan migrants and refugees away from the border state of Roraima to other parts of the country. We present how the militarization of Operation Welcome was carried out through a “bureaucratization of militarization,” instead of conventional military tactics seeking to contain migration. And we discuss how access to the national territory and legal employment for Venezuelans in Brazil facilitates their insertion into racial capitalist structures of labor exploitation. Employing extensive fieldwork data, interviews, and participant observations to sustain these claims, we present how migration securitization methods, processes, and outcomes are not simply the result of sovereignty anxieties or a need to reaffirm border security, but rather are also shaped by global and local structures of (racialized) exploitation and dispossession.

The Encyclopedia of Arabic Rhetoric is a curated compendium of Arabic rhetorical devices. It is designed primarily as a structured resource to assist in the accurate, consistent, and reproducible identification of rhetorical devices in Arabic discourse. Because the Encyclopedia departs in certain ways from the organisation of classical pedagogical manuals, this page explains the five overarching principles that govern its design.

Arabic rhetorical device where the communicator inserts a well-known poem or story into a new text.

To support long-term portability and structural flexibility, the Enclyclopedia of Arabic Rhetoric's alphanumeric rhetorical device identifiers were replaced with semantic identifiers in February 2026.

With increasing intensity, the twenty-first century has ushered in a new subgenre of the feminist, woman serial killer story. Undoubtedly, and in no small part related to the rise of podcasts, as well as the growing interest in historical crime and true crime, the success of television shows and films, this small (perhaps niche) but wide-ranging subgenre has yet to be fully explored. In this article, I will begin to explore the feminist woman serial killer novel. I will argue that this global subgenre is characterized by narrative and feminist features in relation to murder, motive, and the genre of crime fiction itself. I will base this study on four novels: Oyinkan Braithwaite’s My Sister, the Serial Killer (2019), Asako Yuzuki’s Butter (2017), Perihan Mağden’s Escape (2012), and Katy Brent’s How to Kill Men and Get Away with It (2023), which have remarkable similarities, despite being written and set in disparate cultures and different languages. The woman serial killer novel can be understood as subversive of the (masculinist) conventions of crime fiction and radical in its representation of serial murder. This article will examine how these novels convey their feminist narratives in response to conventions in previous male-focused serial killer fiction, mobilizing new conventions and aesthetics to establish a feminist perspective.
