The aim of the paper is to define what role can play smart city technology in the reconstruction of post-war cities for example in Syrian Arab Republic. The smart city concept offers different opportunities for different countries. The implementation of smart city technology concepts, especially in post-war cities, faces different challenges and if a given smart city solution can simply transplanted from one city situation to post-war cities. This paper will discuss some of these challenges. The immediate need for cities reconstruction in the post-war countries is to provide adequate urban infrastructure to meet the increasing pace of urbanization after war. In the process of meeting infrastructure demands, smart technology applications provide a way for such cities to achieve leapfrogging after war. Smart technology will able to plan better in the areas that affected by war, post-war cities with smart city's ability to analyse large amount of data. This will allow for proactive maintenance and a better planning for the future, having a smart-technology means that the post-war cities can move forward, and use data collected to make meaningful changes in city plans. Lack of finance and well-developed business models in post-war countries, make the challenge difficult and is often to maintain legacy infrastructure systems, which cannot be abandoned due to cost, space and other considerations unlike other countries that they respond to the sustainable development and needs of society. While technology in the form of smart city is an integral part of a smart city, it should only be seen as an enabler to meet the needs of the people of the city and the need to localize this technology. Smart technology should be chosen with a deep understanding of people’s needs, lifestyles, behaviours, and cultures. Ultimately, smart technology in planning post-war cities requires the participation of local communities for success.

In this paper, we aim to state the usage of smart wearable technology for learning and education purpose of elementary level children. This paper reports the feasibility and explains the benefits of using smart wearable technology while teaching elementary school students.

Background and Objectives Korea is undergoing one of the fastest demographic transitions among OECD countries, with rural communities experiencing the sharpest consequences of aging and depopulation. In these areas, older adults face multiple disadvantages, including social isolation, limited income and education, and restricted access to health and welfare services. In response, national policies have promoted smart care technologies—sensors, monitoring devices, and AI-based services—as part of community-based integrated care. While these technologies are expected to reduce service gaps, less attention has been paid to how frontline providers understand what constitutes “good care” in this context. Research Design and Methods Our study examined the perspectives of village care managers, who coordinate health, welfare, and smart care resources in rural communities. 16 managers involved in a pilot smart integrated care project in Jeongeup, Jeonbuk-do, were interviewed through semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Results : Our findings suggest that good care cannot be solely achieved through technological monitoring or efficiency. It still requires relational qualities—sincerity, respect, and social connection—combined with professional competence and coordination across fragmented services. Participants highlighted that smart technologies may support safety and access but cannot substitute for human interaction, local collaboration, and skilled guidance in bridging digital divides. Discussion and Implications By foregrounding providers’ perspectives, this study adds to ongoing debates about the meaning of good care in digitally integrated rural care settings. Smart technologies can support safety and access, but their value depends on how they are embedded in practices of empathy, respect, professional guidance, and community collaboration.

PurposeAlthough research on smart technologies explains their critical importance in sustainable business models (SBMs) (Mikalefet al., 2017), it remains unclear how organisations can embrace smart technologies to create and/or improve their sustainable business models. The purpose of this paper is to unravel and address the challenges of smart technologies to build and maintain a sustainable business model for organisations.Design/methodology/approachThe research develops an empirical analysis through a case study approach. We have investigated the case of ENAV – an Italian air navigation service provider – and how this firm uses smart technologies in the creation of its successful SBM. After constructing a basic theory, the authors moved to evidence collection. The data analysis has adopted a qualitative approach based on a thematic analysis of the transcripts and related documents.FindingsThe findings from the case study support the idea that the business value and the strategic relevance of smart technologies still remain largely underestimated in SBM adoption (Mikalefet al., 2017). Case study findings suggest that until today smart technologies have played a minimal role in SBM adoption. However, the smart technologies show the potential to inform the SBM adoption process by contributing to corporate communication for external stakeholders and to the main dimensions of SBMs such as safety and security or the respect for social and environmental criteria in the supply chain.Practical implicationsThis study seeks to support organisations and their directors to build and improve sustainable business models through smart technologies to maintain their competitive advantages. Specifically, our findings suggest that smart technologies can help organisations bridge the design–implementation gap of sustainable business models.Originality/valueThis research advances our understanding of the role of smart technologies by explaining how they can enhance sustainable business model adoption. Indeed, we offer a comprehensive view of the integration of insights from three different but related literature streams such as sustainability strategies, smart technologies and change management studies.

Buildings are considered one of the main causes of increasing CO2 emissions due to their excessive consumption of energy. The drive towards sustainability represents a challenge especially in existing buildings. The aim of the research is to support the built environment’s move onto a low-carbon path using smart technologies. This research highlights the role of smart building technologies in increasing energy savings of office buildings in Egypt, taking into consideration their incremental cost. Based upon data available on Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) website, association rule has been applied using Apriori Algorithm to identify the most used smart technologies in EDGE-certified office buildings, in addition to the different smart-orientated retrofitting scenarios that could be applied. Using EDGE software, energy assessment of an existing office building in Egypt was performed. This assessment acts as a “reference point” to quantify the impact of each smart technology and retrofitting scenario on the energy savings, incremental costs, and payback period. Limitations of the application of the different smart technologies impacted the selection process for the different scenarios. These limitations can be summarized in the suitability of application in the existing building’s systems, the availability and cost in the local market, and the potential of the building’s infrastructure adaptation to the proposed technologies. Based upon the above limitations, the best scenario was selected. Results showed that smart technologies have a great role in retrofitting of office buildings reaching more than 20% energy savings. In addition, the high initial cost of applying smart technologies could be covered within around 3 years of operation. This research could be used as a guide for improving energy performance of existing office buildings in Egypt using smart technologies.

In today’s fast-paced technological landscape, the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Smart Technologies, and Data Science are experiencing unprecedented growth. With the rise of Computer Vision, Internet of Things (IoT), and Machine Learning (ML), these domains are reshaping human life and society on a global scale. However, with such advancements, the importance of security in these areas has become more relevant than ever before. As these technologies rely heavily on data analytics, AI, and ML, new security requirements have emerged, urging researchers to focus on developing secure models and architectures.

The object of the research is the process of ensuring the protection of data transmission in communication channels of critical infrastructure objects based on mobile and smart technologies. The development of quantum computing technologies based on Grover and Shor algorithms provides practical cracking of symmetric and asymmetric cryptosystems in polynomial time. The emergence of systems based on artificial intelligence allows creating hybrid systems for detecting weaknesses (critical points) in security systems not only on critical infrastructure objects. In addition, a full-scale quantum computer will open a new era of implementing post-quantum cryptography algorithms. Among the winners of post-quantum algorithms, the crypto-code constructions (CCC) of McEliece and Niederreiter are separately highlighted, which allow to provide the required level of protection and the required level of reliability of information transmission in an integrated manner. But a significant drawback is the possibility of cracking such systems on linear codes, as well as the need to build them on the Galois field 210–213, which significantly reduces their use in low-capacity systems based on smart and mobile technologies. To solve this drawback, the work proposes the use of a symmetric CCC based on the Rao-Nam scheme on algebrogeometric and flawed codes, which provides the possibility of significantly reducing the volume of key data (construction of CCC over the Galois field 24–26). When using the Rao-Nam CCC, a quantum symmetric algorithm is formed, which ensures the preservation of the level of stability and reliability of information transmission (safe time 1025–1035). This approach provides the possibility of forming intelligent information protection systems (IIPS). The given structural scheme of the IIPS construction ensures timely detection of threats with an assessment of the computational and financial and human capabilities of attackers, as well as the use of the necessary CCC/algebraic (flawed) codes to ensure the required level of security

The terms smart homes, intelligent homes, home networking have been used for more than a decade to introduce the concept of networking devices and equipment in the house. According to the Smart Homes Foundation the best definition of smart home technology is the integration of technology and services through home networking for a better quality of living. If simple plug-and- play tools for controlling lights are included (e.g. X10 tools) or the computer network in houses are accounted for as smart home technology, hundred thousands of homes all over the world may be called smart homes as well. Only recently, some dozens of projects with smart technology in the houses of older people have been realised or started. The aim of introducing smart technology in these houses is the wish of the tenants to stay independent in their own house as long as possible. Applications are focussed on safety and security, care and comfort. In this presentation an overview will be given of the detailed applications in both new built houses and renovation projects. A summary of the first findings of experiences and reactions of older tenants will be included. Key factors in the further technical development of smart homes are the proper electrotechnical infrastructure, flexible solutions in infrastructure and applications because of shifting needs and wishes, acceptable user interfaces, and costs. Even more important for acceptance and breakthrough will be the content and services that can be delivered to the home. A wide range of companies is developing business models to serve the end consumer. Reference will be made to The Smartest House of the Netherlands, a new demonstration house of the Smart Homes Foundation, where both consumers and companies give feedback on the current market developments. The Internet and mobile telephony have been keen drivers to stimulate the interest of technology in the household. But also several economic and socio-cultural factors will cause changes in society in which smart home technology will really break through. The ageing western societies and the clearly expressed needs of older people have raised particular awareness of the several parties in the building process for the opportunities of smart home technology. Finally, based on expected product launches and technical developments at major international companies, as well as based on the feedback of older people currently living in smart homes, some expectations for the near future will be given.

As smart technology use is growing in residential environments, research on howsuch technologies can provide opportunities for safely and actively aging inplace by integrating physical activity into daily routines and reducingsedentariness is scarce. This study investigated older adults’ intentions to useand attitudes toward currently available smart home technologies that couldcontribute to safe and active lives in and around home. The focus was on fourrepresentative technologies: smart lighting, smart door locks, smart fireprevention devices, and smart home systems/home automation. This paper presentsthe results of a sequential mixed-methods study comprised of online andin-person surveys (n = 129), and a focus group ofcommunity-dwelling older adults, aged 50+ (n = 15). Ordinalregression analyses indicated that perceived usefulness consistently predictsolder adults’ attitudes and willingness to use smart home products. While smartfire prevention devices were viewed most favorably due to their potential safetybenefits, perceived affordability significantly influenced older adults’intentions to use them in their homes. The focus group findings underscoretechnology skepticism, privacy concerns and return on investment as significantdeterminants of attitudes toward the smart design products. The study hasimplications of designers and manufacturers by providing insights on how toprioritize smart home technology integrations to homes.

Economic transformation and world industrialization are accompanied by developing technologies in all economic sectors. Along with that, its development is driven not only by the use of smart technologies but also by ensuring comfortable working conditions for industrial and office workers at production corporations. The most important factor is the trend in using climate technologies that improve the room climate and reduce the negative impact produced by hazardous production factors on workers’ health. Recently, digital smart technologies have been actively integrated into climate systems that can simplify their control and adapt to the peculiarities of air circulation by using minimum energy. Smart climate technologies are increasingly entering industrial markets, as they can be controlled from a single remote centre, regardless of the equipment location. The advantage of such innovations is the capacity to automatically adjust the equipment settings required depending on air deformations. This reduces the negative impact on indoor worker operation, with no direct assistance required. Technology operation is based on artificial intelligence behaviour, which is also being constantly changed. As a result, the established digital-first is step-by-step replaced with innovative AI-first developments. The key task for this trend is to build the foundation for digitalization in all processes to efficiently collect and analyze data used in managing the specific actions, ensuring healthy airspace in particular. Studying smart climate technologies is actively discussed in the scientific and industrial environment, as evidenced by international forums and conferences. The keynote of these events is to promote a scientific and technological breakthrough in climate technologies, which is undoubtedly associated with the integration of digital smart innovations into such solutions that are capable to meet social needs to ecologize the world and improve working conditions for millions of workers. The article is also aimed to analyze the use of digital innovations in climate equipment at industrial companies. The use of different options to digitize these devices and their impact on business climate conditions was compared. It was concluded that investing in smart climate technologies is justified by green economy goals and a significant increase in labour productivity. The introduction of smart solutions in the climate systems of modern industrial businesses has been proven to be able to adapt to the overall infrastructure of their production sites integrated into a single remote dispatch centre, which includes all elements of digital technologies used in controlling. The given digitalization examples, climate control at large businesses, in particular, have justified the feasibility of their use and a positive impact on all production indicators.KeywordsInnovationSmart technologiesClimate technologyLabour productivityInvestmentEfficiencyJEL ClassificationO32O33L630

The killing of George Floyd in the United States has drawn attention to police brutality worldwide because it was caught on video. The frequency of incidents of police brutality has resulted in mutual distrust and fear between police and citizens. Repeated stories of police violence suggest policing needs a reimagined overhaul that addresses human rights. New ubiquitous technologies point to a need for greater smart policing research, development and technology management. Surveillance cameras and robotics are considered forms of smart policing. Robocops are currently out on patrol in many jurisdictions around the world. Smart technologies have the potential to improve policing and ethical outcomes through technological objectivity. Smart policing can potentially alleviate racial bias through technology management. Many reported incidents of police brutality in the United states involve traffic stops. While there is likely a need for traditional policing in cases such as rape and murder, violent—often fatal— incidents stemming from community policing interactions should be examined. This systemic review finds that there are few studies that address this gap. The “defund the police” movement in relation to minor crimes includes the reallocation of funds toward community services and community policing. This research focuses on how police funds can be better allocated toward social services, community policing and smart policing that results in much needed police reforms.
