Challenges and Trends in Home Automation

Home automation (HA) systems can be considered as an implementation of the internet of everything (IoE) where many devices are linked by intelligent connections in order to improve the quality of life at home. This chapter is dedicated to analyzing current trends and challenges in HA. Energy management, safer homes, and improved control over the house are some of the benefits of HA. However, privacy, security, social disruption, installation/maintenance issues, economic costs, market fragmentation, and low interoperability represent real problems of these IoE solutions. In this regard, the latest proposals in HA try to answer some of these needs with low-cost DIY solutions, wireless solutions, and IP-based HA systems. This chapter proposes a way to deal with the interoperability problem by means of the open-source platform openHAB. It is based on the concept of a home automation bus, an idea that enables the separation of the physical and the functional view of any device, allowing to create a technology-agnostic environment, which is perfect for addressing the interoperability problem.

Home automation is a modern technology that helps to enjoy comfortable living conditions inside the home. With home automation, data can be instantly collected and passed between devices and analyzed simultaneously. By connecting the home appliances with the internet, they can be easily accessed from anywhere. In the home automation system, settings are feasible through smartphones or other remote-control devices. This paper gives the design and implementation of a new voice- controlled home automation system that uses Google Assistant for giving user’s voice commands as input. It is a low cost and flexible home automation and monitoring system. It enables the user to use a home automation system based on the Internet of Things (IoT). Home appliances like fans and lights can be controlled. The fundamental purpose of this project is to control electronic appliances based on the situational demands of the user.

Home automation system has achieved an enormous reputation in recent years, as day-to-day life is getting simpler due to the speedy growth of modern technology. Various implemented systems have been offered in the sphere of Home Automation but have apparently failed to provide cost-effective solutions for the same. In this paper, we provide a low-cost smart Home Automation and Security System (HASS) using Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi), and Bluetooth. These materialize the concept of internetworking of smart devices. A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) based on Wi-Fi is considered to monitor and control the smart environment, safety as well as electrical parameters of a smart interconnected home. The Android application-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) on a Smartphone is used to give facility to users for seamless control over the devices in a smart home. It may also consist of home security for example access control and alarm systems. When connected to the Internet, home devices are an important element of the Internet of Things (IoT). Home security includes both the security hardware placed on a property and individuals' personal security practices. Security devices consist of a door locking, alert alarm, lighting, motion detectors, and security camera system. Additionally, several special features include such as ensuring windows are closed, each door is locked, all alarms are activated, and extra keys are not secret outside.

This paper presents a design and prototype implementation of a renewable energy-powered home with a basic home automation system using Internet Of things (IoT). The proposed system consists of two main parts; The first part consists of renewable energy (solar) power system where the power supplied to the house is produced from solar panel(s), which will be supplied to an inverter through a MPPT-based solar charge controller. A battery has been used in the system as a backup power supply which will be charged with the help of the charge controller. The excess power generated (when no home appliances are used and the battery is fully charged) will be supplied to the power grid or will be used to run an external AC motors such as water pumps. The second part consists of home automation using Internet Of things (IOT) using a Wi-Fi interface and an android application BLYNK. With the help of the mentioned android application BLYNK, the user will be able to know the current status of the lights and other electrical appliances of their house, whether the lights and other electrical appliances are turned on/off, and can remotely turn on/off the appliances and lights. The home automation in this prototype is focussed on the parts only where most of the energy could be wasted when we forget to turn off the lights, fan and power plugs while leaving the house and could be turned on/off remotely through an android app. The two subparts of the design will be finally combined to make a renewable energy-based smart home. Unlike the costly and sophisticated home automation systems available in the market, this design is cheap and simple, and can be easily implemented in our home.

Internet of things is eventually a connection of many things and appending them into a real-world environment by interconnecting them. These days, we get to come across a frequent subjective regarding home automation system which has bagged enormous popularity in the last few decades using the internet of things (IoT). In this tremendous growth of technology, IOT marks its own identity by making life easier in this busiest world. It mainly focuses on the safe and secure quality of life. In this era, the internet of things (IoT) plays a crucial role by handling a plethora of connections with billions and trillions of things with devices and also with people. We people starting from the day to the end of the day we need to manage many things around us and sometimes there is no time for us to take better care towards home automation. IOT specifically interrelates a set of things in a single base and controls them over. It not only controls and takes care of the devices but also keeps informing the users. Homes are very reliable places where people crave for more security and care in the current world. So, IOT deserves its place by giving a satisfactory outcome in better home automation. In this paper we are going to see how I build a huge network of connection and how it controls and handles plenty of home appliances using different types of communication, and the better and cheaper types of connections for a safe home and how user can control his home effectively by staying far away by sending a single text and also it will get to know what are the pros and cons and different types of applications providing by IoT.

Combining Industry 4.0, energy management, and the Internet of Things creates a potent concoction that portends an exciting future with lower prices and better performance. The velocity at which disruptive technologies are developing is unheard of. It is challenging to differentiate between technologies that could become outdated before their full potential is achieved and those that save money. It is challenging for businesses to sift through the hype and find suitable technology that serves their objectives and provides a quick, profitable return on investment. With the advancement of technology and internet connectivity, the world is transitioning into a digital era where manual processes are being automated through tools and techniques. From this perspective, IoT plays a vital role in process automation and streamlining work processes. IoT energy management utilizes real-time energy consumption data to optimize resource utilization, such as reducing power consumption in factories, homes, shopping malls, stadiums, and other similar facilities. Energy management can be challenging due to the variety of machinery and processes involved. However, it takes on a new dimension now that the Internet of Things (IoT) exists. By 2030, energy management systems that use IoT will have reduced electricity consumption by more than 1.6 petawatt-hours (PWH). That would be sufficient to power over 150 million homes for a full year. In addition to improving the efficiency of the electric power supply, the Internet of Things energy management system offers numerous other benefits, including significant cost reductions, enhanced security, and improved management of energy data. IoT applications are constantly expanding, with the primary goal of increasing energy efficiency. Home automation, one of the most wellknown industries, involves networking homes to create intelligent living spaces. Digitalization is utilized in the domestic sphere to optimize and control energy consumption within the home. For instance, it can be used to automatically adjust the temperature based on outside weather conditions, control lighting according to the time of day, or manage the use of household appliances that can alert users to uneven consumption. In interconnected residential complexes, IoT-based systems enable comprehensive energy management. This allows for centralized control over aspects such as lighting, air conditioning, and heating. Furthermore, sensors can identify occupants within rooms, enabling dynamic adjustments to energy consumption in common areas like escalators and elevators, thereby optimizing overall energy efficiency.

Home automation systems (HAS), leveraging the power of the Internet of Things (IoT), are gaining significant attention for their potential to reduce costs, labor, and human error. As the demand for smart home technologies grows, effective energy management and cost reduction become increasingly important. This research explores the technical landscape of IoT-based HAS, focusing on remote control and management of home appliances through smartphones and dedicated applications. A comparative analysis of various HAS solutions will be conducted to evaluate their functionality, usability, and energy efficiency. Additionally, the study will examine the security and privacy implications of IoT-based home automation and potential barriers to adoption such as cost and complexity. By addressing these key issues, this research aims to contribute to the development of more effective and accessible smart home solutions.

A home automation system means monitoring and controlling various kinds of devices in the home remotely using the Internet of things (IoT). Technologies such as natural language processing techniques, user-friendly visual programming, and machine intelligence programming are already available for home automation. For such systems, the increase in the number of devices often makes users focused on the system’s ability to perform complex or composing tasks. However, some existing natural language processing systems can only perform simple tasks and cannot meet users’ needs. Thus, it is difficult for users to develop the home automation systems they need using visual programming systems because of the large amount of programming knowledge required. Meanwhile, automatic programming without user action can only write a few lines of code and implement little functionality. There are relatively few tools available for generating home automation scripting languages. To address this problem, we propose a practical method for generating executable home automation scripts using Chinese texts. Our method includes the following steps: it extracts critical information from the command sentences in Chinese; it uses first-order logic to check the validity of the extracted information; based on the validation, the correct sentences are mapped into the intermediate language scripts, which can interface with different home platforms. We conducted experiments on Home Assistant, converted intermediate scripts to Home Assistant, and collected 600 scenario descriptions. The experimental results show that the method can automatically generate executable scripts for the Home Assistant platform, and the correct rate was 93.66%.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has been widely regarded as the driving force behind the transformation of our daily lives. Home automation, which is a key application of IoT, is becoming more prominent with the advent of smart homes. This trend is particularly evident as a growing number of households are seeking to integrate smart home automation systems into their daily routines. The concept behind IoT is simple, it involves the connection of daily life devices to the internet and vice versa, thus enabling them to communicate and carry out tasks autonomously or through remote commands from the user. IoT's intervention homes is vast and has several aspects of applications. In this study we will be discussing a few of those applications including home automation for control of home appliances without physical presence, monitoring of garden plants and autonomous or semi-autonomous irrigation systems, home security and surveillance using sensors for real-time alerts and alarms in case of unauthorized access.

LoRa and server-based home automation using the internet of things (IoT)

The project proposes an efficient implementation for IoT (Internet of Things) used for monitoring and controlling the home appliances via World Wide Web. Home automation system uses the portable devices as a user interface. They can communicate with home automation network through an Internet gateway, by means of low power communication protocols like Zigbee, Wi-Fi etc. This project aims at controlling home appliances via Smartphone using Wi-Fi as communication protocol and raspberry pi as server system. The user here will move directly with the system through a web-based interface over the web, whereas home appliances like lights, fan and door lock are remotely controlled through easy website. An extra feature that enhances the facet of protection from fireplace accidents is its capability of sleuthing the smoke in order that within the event of any fireplace, associates an alerting message and an image is sent to Smartphone. The server will be interfaced with relay hardware circuits that control the appliances running at home. The communication with server allows the user to select the appropriate device. The communication with server permits the user to pick out the acceptable device. The server communicates with the corresponding relays. If the web affiliation is down or the server isn't up, the embedded system board still will manage and operate the appliances domestically. By this we provide a climbable and price effective Home Automation system.

Home Automation can also make use of Gesture Detection and Controls. It is the primary objective of this article to build a house. Electronic home gadgets like TVs, fans, and lights can all be controlled using the internet, and at a very low cost. So, the objective is to assemble ARDUINO board and Bluetooth are used to create a home automation system that can be controlled from an Android smartphone.

Objective of this paper is to combine the concept of solar power inverter, wireless power transfer concept used for the generation of power and Internet of Things (IoT) based home automation system. A solar power inverter is designed to produce AC power, required for home automation. The generated power can be used in the application of home automation where the devices are controlled by the technology called Internet of Things. The proposed design concept is used to monitor and control electrical energy consuming devices like switches, bulb, television, etc., in order to effectively balance energy generation and usage. Renewable energy sources are utilized for system working to show effectiveness in design. The obtained AC power is utilized further in wireless power transfer circuit to again recharge the battery through a rectifier circuit. The hardware demonstration for home automation made in this paper will help in reducing energy wastage by continuously monitoring and controlling the electrical appliances.

Traditional home automation is inconvenient for aging people. Biometric based personalized smart phone secures smart home automation. Internet of Things (IoT) is envisioned as a promising solution in the thrusting arenas of healthcare, industries, home automation and other domains due to its significant contribution towards connectivity, security, sleek design, low power, low cost and low workforce. This has come a long way industrially and is making an impact in the domestic market after Covid-19 pandemic. Social distancing and contact less solution is the need of the hour. Life style of people has changed from home to workplace such as remote monitoring, collaborative online work-place and online classes. This has increased the economic status of the home automation products manufacturing industry. User Authenticated Smart Home Automation with Healthcare Architecture considers security along with healthcare. This takes into account IoT reusable design concept that uses in-built user specific biometrics in smart phone for secured authentication. IoT based electronics and electrical devices are remotely monitored. The user activity is monitored and archived for future retrieval. An ambient temperature is maintained to make sure that the devices are operated in near ideal circumstances to avoid thermal throttling and this extends the lifetime of the devices. Thermal throttling causes serious threats to the devices and to the human being. In the proposed User Authenticated Smart Home Automation System with Healthcare, smart home is secured using user specific biometric authentication; sanitizer is provided and temperature is measured on entry; thermal throttling due to devices is prevented by maintaining the room temperature thereby providing healthcare.

Internet of Things (IoT) emerges as a possible solution to realize a smart life in the modern age. However, how to provide a transparent IoT service to fit users' needs and how to quickly develop smart services with flexibility and scalability are still problems. In this article, we present a novel NFC-driven home automation framework for IoT, which integrates the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), Social Networks, and the Cloud Computing. Near Field Communication (NFC) technology provides a way for users to exchange information between them and the system by simply contacting. So, we propose to use NFC as the system drive in the framework, such that users can intuitively interact with the system and deliver their intentions. Then, the corresponding service over the framework will control or adjust the “things” at home to fit users' needs. Furthermore, the proposed framework provides a platform for developers to easily and rapidly implement their home automation related services. In the framework, WSN sensing and control, NFC communications and identification, user profile management and preference analysis, and social network integration are all provide as platform services. Application developers are allowed to skip these details. The framework can be applied on Home Automation and Elderly Care. Take Home Automation as an example, we will show how the framework works for home automation, secure house, and social network sharing.
