Domain based fast feature modeling: Design and implementation

Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) tools have been available to the architect in practically useful form for a close to a century. It has evolved from being a complicated simulation tool available to mainframe computers and used exclusively by experts working on special “CAAD projects” to being accessible to any interested individual on a personal computer. CAAD plays a vital role on the profession and academia of architecture in recent years. The aim of this study is to provide a reflective perspective of the current architecture education on CAAD in the Department of Architecture in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). It compares the method of architecture design education in the department of architecture in KNUST to other methods architecture design education of other universities. It examines the various benefits of incorporating CAAD into the curriculum and looks at the various shortfalls limiting the full exploitation of CAAD into the design curriculum of architecture education also the role CAAD the design process from conceptual to final product is examined. Survey questionnaires were distributed to students in the Department of Architecture and CAAD tutors interviewed to ascertain the level of impact of CAAD in the department. It was realized that the level of integration of CAAD with the design studio is low and transition from traditional drafting methods to the modern methods of using computers in design is not clearly established, thus recommendations were made to rectify the situation.

Context. Software systems play a pervasive role in people's lives. Since ethics in software systems is hardly ever considered as a first-class entity, its support of, or hindrance to, values of users and society is usually neglected. Addressing ethics requires both to consider the context in which a software system is used, and the fact that ethical values (e.g., social, cultural and personal) are intrinsically ambiguous and subjective. Software architecture and architecture design decision making are the right levels of abstraction to both consider such a context, and support reasoning about such subjectivities. Goal. We aim to embed ethical aspects in software architecture design decision making. We have studied the state of the art in ethics for software engineering, to identify the ethical aspects influencing software architecture design. We will use the learned ethical aspects to (i) support architecture design decision making with respect to ethics through proposing methods, models, and techniques, and (ii) conduct empirical studies to evaluate them in industrial practice. Method. We will adopt a design science approach for our research which includes three phases: (i) problem understanding, (ii) solution design, and (iii) solution validation. Results. Based on our previous literature study, we build models (and techniques) embedding the ethical aspects to be used in architecture design decision making. Also, we will apply design science research to use and validate these models in a method assisting practitioners and architects to embed ethical aspects in software architecture design.

Robots are gaining popularity in architecture. Snøhetta has recently purchased their own industrial robot, becoming one of the first architectural offices to adopt robot technology. As more and more architects are exposed to robotic fabrication, the need for easy interoperability, integration into architectural design tools and general accessibility will increase. Architects are discovering that industrial robots are much more than kinematic machines for stacking bricks, welding or milling - they are highly multifunctional and can be used for a huge variety of tasks. However, industry standard software does not provide easy solutions for allowing direct robot control right from CAAD (Computer Aided Architectural Design) systems. In this paper we will discuss existing methods of programming industrial robots, published architectural results (Gramazio and Kohler 2008) and the design of a new user interface that allows intuitive control of parametric designs and customized robotic mass production, by integrating CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) functions into CAAD.

The presence of both visible and hidden digital resources in daily life is overwhelming and their presence continues to grow exponentially. It is surprising how little the impact of this evolution is questioned, especially in education. Reflecting on past experiences of this subject to learn for the future seems rarely to be done, and the sheer fact that a digital method exists is often seen as sufficient justification for its use. Are these the perceptions of serious misgivings or isolated views that circulate in the educational world and beyond? We would suggest that the eCAADe (Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe) and its conferences provide the ideal forum to provide answers in this debate. For the first conference in what is to be the next quarter century of the existence of eCAADe, a theme was chosen that could easily include all aspects of this debate: ARCHITECTURE ‘in computro’ , Integrating methods and techniques It seems a bit vulgar to use a dog-Latin phrase ‘in computro’ for such a serious matter but at least it now has a place between ‘in vivo’ and ‘in vitro’. For more than 25 years CAAD has been available, and has been more and more successfully used in research and commercial architectural practice. In education, which by definition should prepare students for the future, the constantly evolving CAAD metaphor is provoking a challenge to cope with the ever expanding scope of related topics. It is not surprising that this has led to differing opinions as to how CAAD should be taught. Questions such as how advanced research results can be incorporated in teaching, or if the Internet is provoking self-education by students, are in striking contrast with the more fundamental issues such as the discussion on analogue versus digital design methods. Is CAAD a part of design teaching or is it its logical successor in a global E-topia? Although the E of education is a prominent factor in the ‘raison d’être’ of the organisation, the papers presented at this conference illustrate that eCAADe is open to all other relevant contributions in the area of computer-aided architectural design. It will be a fortunate coincidence that this exchange of knowledge and opinions on such state-of-the-art subjects, will be hosted by the The Higher Institute of Architectural Sciences, Henry van de Velde, located in the historical buildings of the Royal Academy of Fine Art established since the founding of the academy in 1662.

The difference between the use of computer aided architecture design (CAAD) in the FRG and the use of CAD in the building industries of foreign countries or in other applications, like the mechanical industries, is decisive for the carefule use of other experiences of man machine interaction for CAAD in the FRG. The specific situation of the building industrie of the FRG, like handscraft production and large work-sharing between the projekt members, makes specific requirements for the interfaces for CAAD. Not only the interaction of architect and machine but also the interaction between the different tasks are important for the question, how we can increase the quality of architecture with CAAD.

Through literature research, this paper aims to discuss the specific application of CNN and DNN in parametric design and the innovation brought by them, and analyzes the application of these technologies in architectural image recognition, generation, design optimization and other aspects. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive reference for researchers in related fields and promote the innovative application of AI technology in architectural design. Chapter 8 - Three-dimensional visualization: a case study

Generative modeling is an approach to computer-assisted geometric modeling. The goal of the approach is to allow convenient and high-level specification of shapes, and provide tools for rendering and analysis of the specified shapes. Shapes include curves, surfaces, and solids in 3D space, as well as higher-dimensional entities such as surfaces deforming in time, and solids with a spatially varying mass density. Shape specification in the approach involves combining low-dimensional entities, especially 2D curves, into higher-dimensional shapes. This combination is specified through a powerful shape description language which builds multidimensional parametric functions. The language is based on a set of primitive operators on parametric functions which include arithmetic operators, vector and matrix operators, integration and differentiation, constraint solution and global optimization. Although each primitive operator is fairly simple, high-level shapes and shape building operators can be defined using recursive combination of the primitive operators. The approach encourages the modeler to build parameterized families of shapes rather than single instances. Shapes can be parameterized by scalar parameters (e.g., time or joint angle) or higher-dimensional parameters (e.g., a curve controlling how the scale of a cross section varies as it is translated). Such parameterized shapes allow easy modification of the design, since the modeler can interact with parameters that relate to high-level properties of the shape. In contrast, many geometric modeling systems use a much lower-level specification, such as through sets of many 3D control points. Tools for rendering and analysis of generative models are developed using the concept of interval analysis. Each primitive operator on parametric functions has an inclusion function method, which produces an interval bound on the range of the function, given an interval bound on its domain. With these inclusion functions, robust algorithms exist for computing solutions to nonlinear systems of constraints and global minimization problems, when these problems are expressed in the modeling language. These algorithms, in turn, are developed into robust approximation techniques to compute intersections, CSG operations, and offset operations.

The computing resources of an organization or project team were often spread across many different platforms and in different locations. Recently, there has been a growing interest in distributed CAAD (Computer-Aided Architectural Design) integration due to the needs of direct collaboration among project participants. The potential for the integration of information is expected to have a tremendous impact on architecture and the construction industry. The aim of this research is to provide a new paradigm for a CAAD system by combining research on integrated CAAD applications with recent collaboration technologies. To accomplish this research objective, the proposed system has been designed and a prototype implemented to produce enough guidelines to foster interest in the development of future CAAD systems on the Internet. To this end, two different scopes of implementation are evaluated: first, global architecture and the functionality of a distributed CAAD system; and, second, the association of an architectural application to the system.

This paper investigates new design methods, showing the experimental use of new digital tools, CNC-techniques and technologies so as to expand the definition of contemporary architecture.This investigation of new technologies extends the traditional practice of architectural design to include issues of design, multimedia, programming, control systems and fabrication by using computer controlled machines.The main teaching and research focus of the Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture (MAS), Specialization in Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD), Prof. Dr. Ludger Hovestadt, is the computer based architectural design and its automated production.The aim of our research and teaching project is to achieve a close connection between design and production by embedding the "digital chain" in the whole process.The digital chain is a design and production sequence with no analogue steps; the process offers high flexibility in terms of design and production.The use of new digital tools in architecture extends the profession beyond traditional design.

The introduction of physically-based description and simulation methods to issues of building performance (i.e., acoustic, visual, and air quality; thermal comfort, cost, and long-term system integrity) began in the early 1960s as one of the first examples of computer-aided design in architecture. Since that time, the development of commercially-available computer-aided design systems has largely been oriented towards the visualization and representation of the geometry of buildings, while the development of building performance applications has been concerned with approaches to mathematical and physics-based modeling for predictive purposes.

Oracles, draughtsmen, and agents: the nature of knowledge and creativity in design and the role of IT

Architectural Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is a basic course for architectural engineering majors in vocational colleges. The integration of competition into teaching will not only help stimulate the students’ enthusiasm, but also help them improve their professional skills. However, there are still some problems in the teaching of Architectural CAD. Therefore, teachers must continuously optimize the integration of competition content into Architectural CAD classes through various strategies, so as to give full play to the value of competition content in classes. We explored and analyzed the problems in the integration of competition content into Architectural CAD classes, and proposed specific strategies, in hopes of improving the quality of Architectural CAD teaching.
