Innovation in Product Design

PurposeTaiwanese computer and electronic products possess advantages in design, innovation, rapid response, and global market flexibility. This study aims to examine Taiwanese computer and electronics firms to explore the product marketing strategies they adopted to deal with global competition. Furthermore, it is intended to analyze firms in different marketing strategic groups in terms of their product design strategies and how they incorporated design and marketing strategies into design innovation. This analysis is applied as an integrated innovation model for allocating design and marketing strategies.Design/methodology/approachBased on a questionnaire survey and case studies, the marketing strategies adopted by the Taiwanese computer and electronics industry can be classified into the categories of “market leader”, “market focus”, “market challenge” and “market niche”.FindingsFirms employing different marketing strategies employed different design innovation strategies in product design. The design strategies adopted by enterprises in the market leader group incorporated aggressive innovation; those in the market focus group were characterized by focus innovation in product design; those in the market challenge group exhibited strong innovation integration in product design; and those in the market niche group exhibited flexible innovation in product design.Originality/valueThe innovation models adopted by the Taiwanese computer and electronics industry were related to enterprise scale, business type, and product development category. Results of this study provide a valuable reference for enterprises with regard to R&D and marketing in relation to product innovation.

Usaha Kecil Menengah (UKM) mempunyai peran penting dan strategis bagi pertumbuhan ekonomi negara, baik negara berkembang maupun negara maju. Pada saat krisis ekonomi berlangsung di Indonesia, Usaha Kecil Menengah merupakan sektor ekonomi yang memiliki ketahanan paling baik. Kemampuan UKM perlu diberdayakan dan dikembangkan secara terus menerus dengan berusaha mereduksi kendala yang dialami UKM, sehingga mampu memberikan kontribusi lebih maksimal terhadap peningkatan kesejahteraan masyarakat. Industri Tanggulangin adalah salah satu UKM yang berdiri sejak 1939 ketika beberapa perajin memulai pembuatan barang-barang tas dan koper. Dan pada tahun 1976 didirikanlah Koperasi Industri Tas dan Koper (Intako), yang awalnya hanya beranggotakan 27 orang. Modal usaha diperoleh dari simpanan pokok anggota. Dalam perjalanannya, koperasi itu terus berkembang dan jumlah anggotanya sudah mencapai 354 perajin UKM dengan aset sekitar Rp 10 miliar. Produk tanggulangin ini telah memiliki brand dan mutu yang cukup bagus yang sudah diakui oleh konsumen. Tetapi setelah terjadi luapan lumpur lapindo hampir 70 persen perajin di Tanggulangin sudah gulung tikar. Beberapa di antara mereka yang masih bertahan hanya untuk menggarap pesanan. Selain itu serbuan barang-barang produk Cina yang harganya sangat kompetitif, namun kualitasnya buruk yang juga ikut andil dalam keterpurukan tersebut. Praktis, sentra industri tas dan koper Tanggulangin sepi pengujung.Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penyebab menurunya penjualan adalah membanjirnya produk cina, kenaikan harga bahan baku, dan kurangnya inovasi desain produk. Oleh karena itu perlu adanya pembinaan dari pemerintah dalam mengembangkan inovasi desain produk dan inovasi dalam pemasaran. Sehingga eksistensi sentra industri tas dan koper Tanggulangin dapat berkembang dan membuka lapangan pekerjaan bagi warga sekitar serta meningkatkan pendapatan asli daerah Kabupaten Sidoarjo.

Then it expounds the hardware design of computer-aided product innovation system; Then it analyzes the application of knowledge resources in the process of computer-aided product innovation design, including the comprehensive utilization of knowledge resources in computer-aided product innovation design and the obstacles to the application of knowledge resources in computer-aided product innovation design. Finally, the paper analyzes the product innovation design based on computer-aided innovation technology, including the problems in the process of product innovation design, how to solve the problems encountered in the process of product design, the generation of solutions to the problems in the process of product design and the process of value analysis in product innovation design, in order to make product design stakeholders pay attention to the research and specific research and development process of computer-aided product innovation design system.

Reverse innovative design — an integrated product design methodology

It was analyzed for the four feedback control modes of knowledge fermentation containing non-feedback, negative feedback, partial feedback and adaptive feedback during the product innovation and design process. It was puts forward that rapid prototyping in the knowledge fermentation feedback control can quickly and efficiently promote knowledge digestion, knowledge conversion, knowledge growth and knowledge spread and product innovation can be accelerated. The case study of sprayer product innovative design and development has illustrated that, it is the most effective product development mode to employ knowledge fermentation adaptive feedback control based on the rapid prototyping which can provide rapid prototyping mold to be catalytic effect. Rapid prototyping can get the error value between outputting knowledge and target knowledge accurately and directly and offer feedback of knowledge fermentation timely. Accordingly it furthers the fermentation knowledge to the target knowledge, and ultimately finishes product innovation.

During the New Product Development (NPD) cycle, it is important to focus and integrate relevant information into the stages of product conceptualisation, design and development so that they can be used for product and process design effectively. In this paper, a Generic Product and Process Development System (GPDS), which integrates knowledge-based technologies of Rule-Based Expert System (RBES) and Case-Based Reasoning (CBR), is proposed to facilitate product and process development. Although RBES is adopted for sorting product design criteria, relevant past cases are retrieved by the CBR system during product and process design stages. In doing so, previous knowledge in terms of rules and past practices will be made use of during the product and process design stages, resulting in an enhancement of the efficiency of design and operations. By applying GPDS in Hasbro Fast East Limited, the new product design life cycle is greatly shortened with significant reduction in the total development cost.

This article examines the role of the Metaverse in shaping future practices for product design, emphasizing its potential for co-creation, rapid prototyping, and user-centric customization in virtual environments. Through an analysis of emerging trends and case studies, the article explores how the Metaverse can redefine the product design process, expanding the possibilities of design and creating new opportunities for interaction and personalization. This discussion aims to provide designers with up-to-date insights into leveraging the Metaverse to drive innovation in product design, ultimately reshaping consumer experiences in the digital era.

This study aims to explore how Beijing Haileyland Maternity and Baby Products Co., Ltd. promotes the comprehensive development of children through its product design innovation. The article first outlines the importance of product design in the children’s toy industry and emphasizes the key role of innovation in meeting the growth needs of children. By integrating child development theories, product design principles, and innovation theories, this study constructs a multidimensional analytical framework. Using qualitative and quantitative research methods, including market research, user interviews, and product analysis, this paper delves into how Beijing Haileyland’s product design affects children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development. The results show that Beijing Haileyland’s innovative product design not only meets children’s basic entertainment needs but also actively promotes their progress in multiple developmental areas. The paper concludes by discussing the interaction between product design and child development, summarizing Beijing Haileyland’s practices and achievements in product design innovation, and providing valuable insights and suggestions for the future development of the children’s toy industry.

One of the snack manufacturers in South Lampung, particularly in the Natar region, where the snack sector is highly competitive, is UD Sanjaya. The purpose of this study is to examine how the competitiveness of the UD Sanjaya food factory in South Lampung, Natar, is impacted by product innovation, product quality, and basreng design. The author bases the question, "Is there an effect of Competitiveness on Product Innovation in Basreng?" on this. This study aims to evaluate UD Sanjaya's competitiveness in the snack market and ascertain how basreng product innovation affects the company's competitiveness. Competitiveness (Y) is the dependent variable, whereas product innovation (X1), product quality (X2), and packaging design (X3) are the independent factors under investigation. This study's methodology is quantitative analysis, and consumer surveys were employed to gather data. The study's findings suggest that product innovation significantly and favorably affects competitiveness since it can boost customer loyalty and attention. Additionally, because consumers are choosing higher-quality products more and more, product quality has a big influence on the present. Due to its ability to affect how consumers view a product, attractive and useful packaging design is also crucial for boosting competitiveness. Overall, this study concludes that the three variables interact with each other and contribute to increasing the competitiveness of UD Sanjaya. Therefore, the company is advised to continue to innovate and improve the quality and design of product packaging to maintain and improve its market position.

Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) -based [5] patent classification is essential for patent management and industrial analysis. However, the most research of patent classification are just on English texts and their methods just consider word order but do not use any parse structure, which rely on the word segmentation. In this paper, we propose a new structured representation [11] framework for TRIZ-based Chinese patent classification, which can discover structures automatically and measure structures Our framework uses structured representation model based on reinforcement learning to discover structures. Furthermore, the structured representation model we use lack attention in important structures which may have information memory loss when dealing with long sentences. Therefore, we use attention mechanisms to measure structures that contribute to the patent classification. On 4 TRIZ based classification tasks, our framework significantly outperformed all models in terms of area under curve (AUC) [23] and outperforms Hierarchically Structured LSTM (HS-LSTM) [11]. Moreover, we achieved absolute improvements of 10.08% in performance on Innovation in product design classification task in AUC score compared with the state-of-the-art model, bidirectional encoder representation from transformers (BERT) [8].

With the improvement of people’s living standards, ethnic tourism has begun to develop in an all-round way, and correspondingly, ethnic cultural products have become more and more dazzling. However, the current tourists’ satisfaction with ethnic cultural tourism products is generally low, so the innovative design of tourism products is an important means to improve the satisfaction of tourism products. The purpose of this paper was to use digital information technology to study the innovation of national cultural wisdom tourism product design and to optimize tourism products. This paper first expounded the experiential design of ethnic cultural tourism products which applies the TEAR theory, and the ASEB grid analysis introduced the four factors of theme, environment, activity, and reaction, analyzed the experience of tourism from the perspective of tourists, then introduced the extraction and development process of digital information technology, and then built a three-dimensional digital model of ethnic cultural tourism product design to lay a solid foundation for product design. In addition, this paper took the development of ethnic cultural tourism products in Yunnan ethnic villages as a case to investigate and analyze the tourist market and tourist needs and finally put forward some product design ideas and suggestions. Through the research and analysis of tourists, it is found that there are more young and middle-aged tourists in Yunnan ethnic villages, and most of them travel with their families. According to the survey of tourists’ preferences, more than 80% of tourists like high-quality and low-cost tourism products, and nearly 50% of tourists want to gain a thinking experience in tourist attractions. The most popular forms of tourists were ethnic art and traditional culture. Therefore, designers can design tourism products according to the preferences of tourists and improve the satisfaction of tourism products.

Product innovation design is challenging due to the complexity of the industrial environment, the changing needs of markets and customers, the effect of intense social competition, and the unpredictability of the future. This paper presents in a systematic analysis of reliability method on industrial product innovation design in order to illustrate what the real meaning of reliability method and how it works on the product innovation design. It also clarifies the relationship between reliability method and product innovation design, reflecting the function of reliability method on each work stage. It is concluded that a suitable thinking mode should be applied on the corresponding design, and it will enhance the effectiveness of innovative product design in general.

Driven by the demand for innovation, design is constantly evolving and is increasingly focused on integrating new technologies into design processes. Technological innovations have proven to be of fundamental importance, both in speeding up and improving production processes and managing and enriching the ideational process.We are now surrounded by software in which the participation of artificial intelligence is constant, but although it has become pervasive, we often do not even notice its presence. In the field of product design, several software exploiting artificial intelligence have been diffused to provide us with virtual products at the two-dimensional level. These software are capable of transforming the ideational stages of a project, as they generate original idea proposals in a matter of minutes. One of the most popular software is Midjourney, which is based on the key text-to-image concept, and can create images from prompts, and descriptive keywords provided by the designer. There are also interesting examples in this regard. Think of the work done by Filippo Nassetti, a British architect and designer, who came up with a series of sunglasses and eyeglasses by going through Midjourney, to obtain zoomorphic-inspired products that recall the textures of biological and mineral microstructures. The surreal collection of biomorphically shaped glasses is an example of the exploration of the creative potential of Midjourney software.Another interesting project is the one tackled by the Oio company for the Spawns spoon collection, in collaboration with Giosanpietro Jewelry. According to Simone Rebaudengo, director and co-founder together with Matteo Loglio of the Oio company, the products in the Spawns collection derive from an ongoing dialogue between different skills that has led to the collaboration between man and algorithm, resulting in an expansion of the handmade, merging the ancient world of craftsmanship with that of advanced technology, defining what they call 'craft intelligence.The paper aims to explore the relationships, potentials and limitations of integrating artificial intelligence into the design process through a design experience that tests the innovative potential of text-to-image software in product ideation and reflects on the redefinition of the designer's role in this rapidly and continuous changing scenario.The case study presented therefore experiments with a design process in which the ideation phase is supported by AI, particularly by text-to-image software, which allows textual descriptions to be translated into visual representations, generating highly detailed images and offering new creative possibilities. The work addressed outlines perspectives and critical issues, which deserve further investigation. On the one hand, one potential that is being outlined is the possibility of visualizing even complex ideas by entrusting the imaginative component to the software, having a multiplicity of alternatives and expanding the ideational range with novel solutions from which to make more informed design choices. Text-to-image software also simulates effective virtual prototyping, allowing a concept to be prefigured and visualized in a three-dimensional context before committing to physical production.On the other hand, text-to-image software has some significant limitations, for example in the poor correspondence of generated images with design intentions and the designer's need to acquire technical skills to effectively use text-to-image software, going on to delineate the possibility of a figure such as that of the prompt designer.Therefore, the presented project aims to contribute to the contemporary debate on the integration of AI into design processes with the collaboration of text-to-image software as another avenue for innovation in product design. <span lang="EN-US">Creativity, a crucial skill in the fourth industrial revolution (IR4.0) is highly demanded in the workforce to drive innovation in product design. Therefore, it is important to cultivate creativity in product design through design and technology (D&T) education. However, many past studies encountered challenges regarding D&T teachers’ teaching creativity which might affect creativity cultivation among students. Thus, this article aims to identify the challenges faced by D&T teachers in cultivating student creativity within product design development. Utilizing the systematic literature review (SLR) method using reporting standards for systematic evidence syntheses (ROSES) in three databases, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Based on thematic analysis, this SLR leads to three themes: i) lack of pedagogical competence; ii) different thinking styles; and iii) lack of motivation. Addressing these challenges highlights the importance for educational institutions to align their curricula with current industry demands, ensuring students are well-prepared to tackle the complexities of contemporary product design. This effort requires collaboration among educators, industry leaders, and policymakers to update teaching methods, incorporate practical experiences, and enhance an environment that cultivates creativity.</span>
