Mastering Visual and CSS Design

Enrollments in online courses continue to grow. With this growth has come an increased need for instructors to develop content for their courses using digital technology. To address instructors’ abilities to develop content for a virtual environment, institutions have focused on the most effective and efficient ways to design online courses and programs. However, despite increased focus on the instructional design of online courses, little attention has been given to their visual design. This is problematic because research suggests that the visual design of online courses can improve the student learning experience. Given this problem, additional research is needed to understand the visual design of online courses, including page layout design and the integration of visual media. Three different studies were conducted to address this problem (a.) Study 1 is a literature review that synthesizes the relevant topics in visual communication design to online course development. The study addressed the mechanics of visual design but also external factors that influence visual design thinking. In this chapter, the authors seek to clarify the process of using visual design to improve the online learning experience. The chapter concludes by suggesting strategies that colleges and universities can use to help faculty and instructional designers learn visual design skills through the creation of a design studio. (b.) Study 2 is an exploratory qualitative study that investigates the ways in which educators in higher education apply visual design to their online courses through the design process framework of looking, thinking, doing, and critiquing (LTD+C). Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore instructor’s use of a visual design process, application of visual design thinking, and perceived barriers in designing online classrooms. Based on the findings of the study, it is suggested that the visual design process in online courses can fit within the LTD+C framework and activities associated with each part of the process should be further explored. (c.) Study 3 is a qualitative content analysis of images used in online courses. The study examined the current use of images in higher-education online classrooms along with the ability of instructors to create, select, and apply images to an online classroom learning management system by exploring well-known frameworks of image taxonomy in online classrooms. Based on the findings of this study it is suggested that the current framework of educational image taxonomy can be elaborated upon and that instructors need better training in appropriately handling using images in online classrooms. The general conclusion promoted in this dissertation is that visual design needs more emphasis within the field of education from both practical applications and research-based studies.

With the continuous development of our country’s modernisation process and the continuous development of education, the education of design talents is getting more and more attention from people, the era of design as a “secondary subject” in schools has ended, modern people have recognised that the world of design is a world of infinite wonders, and that some design experience is an indispensable element for enriching people’s lives, and design is related to the deepest things in human nature. Design is closely related to the deepest part of human nature. As an important part of the design field, visual communication design is not only an education of design techniques as traditionally believed, but also a complex systematic project to develop wisdom. It is not possible to improve one’s design quality with only a little bit of technique. In addition to mastering design technique, we must also be familiar with the development history of design and its development prospect, have the ability to appreciate design and have insight into design, and fully explore one’s own visual thinking, so as to make one’s own design thinking more active. Visual thinking is a novel concept. This ability is inherent in us, and for designers of visual communication design, the cultivation of visual thinking should be richer and more diversified. But to engage in design through this ability requires special training.

With the continuous development of China’s social economy, the competitiveness of brand market is gradually increasing. In order to improve their own level in brand building, major enterprises gradually explore and study visual communication design. Brand visual design has also received more and more attention. Building a complete and rich visual design system can improve the brand level and attract users to consume. Based on the abovementioned situation, this paper proposes to use collaborative filtering algorithm to analyze and study brand visual design. Firstly, a solution is proposed to solve the problem of low accuracy of general recommendation algorithm in brand goods. Collaborative filtering algorithm is used to analyze the visual communication design process of enterprise brand. Research on personalized image design according to consumers’ trust and recognition of brand design is conducted. In traditional craft brand visual design, we mainly study the impact of image design on consumer behavior. The brand loyalty model is used to predict and analyze the visual design effect. Also, the user’s evaluation coefficient is taken as the expression of brand visual design recognition. Finally, the collaborative filtering algorithm is optimized to improve the consumer similarity based on the original algorithm. The results show that the brand visual design using collaborative filtering algorithm can help enterprises obtain greater benefits in their own brand construction. It provides effective data help in the development of traditional craft brands.

Visual communication design and space design is discussed in this paper the complementary relationship between, it is worth mentioning that the visual communication design can be a good blend of collision and space design, so the analysis of the blend mode in the design of visual communication design elements in space, and space visual design elements of law, more reasonable and effective use of visual communication design elements in space design activities for better design services, become a carrier capacity and environmental design in visual communication design concept, therefore, in the design of the two classify, between the two cannot be away from each other, can only promote better design complement each other. As is known to all, the most direct contact between human beings in this world is vision, also known as sight and sight, followed by hearing, smelling and tasting. Therefore, the more intuitive feelings of human beings will be conveyed by vision. In 1960, the term ＂visual communication＂ popular in the world design congress held in Japan, including printed newspapers and magazines, posters and other promotional material design, and television, movies, electronic billboards and other media, through the eyes to convey to the brain for modelling of expressive design is widely referred to as visual communication design, there's a phrase can express: show people design, design. Moreover, in the design of contemporary exhibition space, visual communication design elements are often used. These design elements not only have the function of transmitting information, but also have unlimited commercial value and propaganda effect. Left the concept of positioning, space design is only the so-called functional platter; Ignore the visual communication of visual language, no matter how good the environment will be due to graphic design style gap and left a failure. As we know, one of the most important functions of visual communication design elements is to help present the most complete visual effect in the spatial display. The organic connection between visual communication design and display space design not only harmonizes the relationship between two-dimensional plane and three-dimensional space environment, but also expands the cooperation between subjects and strengthens the research space between the two design disciplines. Only in this way can designers solve complex and comprehensive problems and help designers make full use of their advantages to create better works.

Templates have emerged as an effective approach to simplifying the visualization design and programming process. For example, they enable users to quickly generate multiple visualization designs even when using complex toolkits like D3. However, these templates are often treated as rigid artifacts that respond poorly to changes made outside of the template’s established parameters, limiting user creativity. Preserving the user’s creative flow requires a more dynamic approach to template-based visualization design, where tools can respond gracefully to users’ edits when they modify templates in unexpected ways. In this paper, we leverage the structural similarities revealed by templates to design resilient support features for prototyping D3 visualizations: recommendations to suggest complementary interactions for a users’ D3 program; and code augmentation to implement recommended interactions with a single click, even when users deviate from pre-defined templates. We demonstrate the utility of these features in Mirny, a design-focused prototyping environment for D3. In a user study with 20 D3 users, we find that these automated features enable participants to prototype their design ideas with significantly fewer programming iterations. We also characterize key modification strategies used by participants to customize D3 templates. Informed by our findings and participants’ feedback, we discuss the key implications of the use of templates for interleaving visualization programming and design.

This chapter presents the saliency evaluation approach for visual design of video games, where visual saliency is an important factor to evaluate the impact of visual design on user experience of video games. To introduce visual saliency into game design, we carried out an investigation on several state-of-art saliency estimation methods, and studied on three approaches for saliency estimation: color-based, histogram-based, and information theory based methods. In experiments, these approaches were evaluated on a public saliency dataset and compared with the state-of-art technologies, and it was shown that the proposed information theoretic saliency model can attain a better performance in comparison with several state-of-art methods. Then we applied the information theoretic saliency model to visual game design with image and video examples and demonstrated on how to help game designers to evaluate their visual design with respect to the salience awareness of human visual perception systems.

By studying the contents, culture, characteristics, functions, information, definition and visual design methods of the visual interface of the infographic, the thinking construction of the visualization of the infographic is constructed. The visual design of infographic is to express certain culture, things, states, data and phenomena through content interpretation, visual illustration, table analysis and thinking cognition, and then highlight visual features with abstract or concrete thinking cognition and concept elaboration. The visual interface design of infographic has the advantage of visual expression for some abstract thinking such as time, culture and space, which is easier to be interpreted by the public than text and language. With the rapid development of digital media technology, digital media context emerges as the times require. Visual communication design also presents language features, aesthetic features and communication features, which have a great impact on visual communication design to a certain extent. However, based on the analysis of the actual situation, visual communication design is still in the situation of challenges and opportunities. Based on this, this paper studies the multiple characteristics of visual communication design in digital media environment. This paper expounds the main characteristics of visual communication design, and analyzes the changes of visual communication design performance in the digital media era. It also discusses the influence of digital media era on visual communication design from three dimensions: changing the form of information dissemination, promoting the development of multidimensional design and realizing virtual design. Finally, the paper compares the visual communication design based on digital media environment with the traditional visual communication design method, aiming to provide reference for the digital development of visual communication design. Research shows that visual communication design can reflect the characteristics of digital media era, break through the limitations of time and space, and bring more aesthetic experience to people. It is worth noting that on the basis of the visual impact brought by digital media technology, it is necessary to alleviate the contradiction between the progress of the times and the development of visual communication design.

Traditional textiles are central to understanding values and influences integral to regional design forms. For example, the various kinds of gringsing woven in Tenganan Pagringsingan, Bali, Indonesia, have a distinct ecology that is social, natural, and spiritual. How can this be sustained to attract a new generation of weavers and dyers within the community as well as ensure the appropriate use of natural resources? Woven textile motifs and patterns can capture cultural forces, and transcribe them into images, forming visual records or archives of significant relationships, perceptions, events, and stories. These images are semiotic and perceptual tools that can facilitate knowledge conservation by re-connecting textile makers/users with original sources of inspiration, myth, and other cultural information. Contemporary media, such as photography or illustrated books, can also be used as tools of connection when used to document textile motifs and cultural practices within these communities. Based on research conducted over 2014-2019, this article introduces 27 gringsing weaves as well as local knowledge associated with the usage of natural elements. Field observations, interviews, and discussions also helped co-create a story prototype and visual character design with some of Tenganan’s inhabitants. These can be used as tools to help re-identify social-natural-spiritual resources in gringsing’s composition and acquaint the community’s younger generation with their cultural inheritance. Keywords: archives, knowledge conservation, participatory learning, story-making, visual design

To improve consumers’ online shopping experiences, companies invest in the visual design of their websites. Although some studies show that visual design positively influences consumer reactions, other studies do not confirm that influence. This research is aimed at exploring those contrasting findings by investigating two boundary variables (website use and user expertise) that delimit the scope of the positive influence of visual design on consumer intentions towards using and recommending e-commerce websites. Two preliminary studies (Study A and Study B) investigate the level at which visual design is mentally construed. The two main studies (Study 1 and Study 2) test our research hypotheses. Study 1 results reveal that visual design exerts different effects on individuals’ intentions depending on when the site is evaluated (before vs after use). Study 2 provides greater insight into the role of visual design after the actual use of the website by considering the moderating role of user expertise. Those findings lead to concrete recommendations about how e-retailers can create more engaging experiences.

The uniqueness of this research lies in its deep focus on the effectiveness of the webstore design itself and its relationship with emotional value, which has rarely been studied before. The research method used a quantitative approach with the help of SPSS to analyze data from 61 respondents who were FEBI IAI Darussalam Ciamis students from generation Z. The results showed that partially, the webstore's visual design and emotional value had no significant effect on the online buying decision for Muslimah clothing in Generation Z. However, simultaneously, these two variables had a positive effect on purchasing decisions for FEBI IAI Darussalam Ciamis students. In conclusion, professionalism, honesty, transparency, and trust in webstore design contribute to consumer buying interest and create positive emotional value as a form of appreciation for the satisfaction and convenience of using the webstore, which ultimately increases the decision to purchase Muslimah fashion products online in Generation Z.

This study analyzes the principles of composition and symbolic meanings of university heraldry and guild heraldry in medieval Europe based on the concept of Thick Discription of Clifford Geertz, a champion of symbolic anthropology. Thick Discription is one of methodologies of cultural studies that helps to demonstrate cultural symbols and signs in the context used. It enables to elucidate complex conceptual structures, many of them superimposed on or knotted into one another, which are strange, inconstant and concealed. We will infer how medieval heraldry as a symbolic sign influences modern visual culture, especially symbol marks because modern university symbols and corporate logos have been rooted in medieval university heraldry and guild heraldry respectively. This paper provides useful academic materials that visual designers and design researchers can refer to.
