Policy conflicts in home automation

The aim of this study is to consolidate semantics, streaming and user-centered rulebased home automation with the goal of thereby enabling more powerful and more user-friendly home automation systems. To reach this goal this thesis incorporates the rather new field of semantic streaming into home automation taking into account the users' needs and perspective. This thesis contributes a structured literature review on rule-based home automation use cases including their classification by new criteria. As part of the analysis a participatory design study was conducted yielding that users prefer visual languages in the domain of home automation. Furthermore a new pattern in semantic streaming was discovered called dynamic sensor selection. As main contribution of this thesis a home automation system based on semantic streaming called ERAS (Event and Rule Automation System) was developed using two hierarchically-aligned visual languages called Event Language (EL) and Rule Language (RL). ERAS was completely implemented also containing an editor for each of the two visual languages. As existing semantic streaming engines and benchmarks for semantic streaming engines did proof not suitable a custom semantic streaming engine called ECQELS (Extended Continuous Query Evaluation over Linked Stream) was designed and implemented as well as a corresponding benchmark introducing the average response time as relevant feature for comparison of semantic streaming engines. The system developed in this thesis was evaluated by performing the implemented benchmark on ECQELS comparing it to CQELS, probably the most powerful existing semantic streaming engine, which yielded that ECQELS can compete with CQELS for rather simple queries. When executing multiple queries simultaneously ECQELS event outperforms CQELS. Furthermore a user acceptance study was conducted as part of the evaluation comparing the visual language EL and the textual language ECQELS regarding usability. As outcome of the study EL was slightly preferred by the users in most cases but differences could not be proven significantly. On the basis of the results of this research, it can be concluded that the use of semantic streaming technologies in the domain of home automation has the potential to provide great benefits for developing more powerful and nevertheless more userfriendly home automation systems.

Chapter 45 - Detection of Conflicts in Security Policies

Home automation is a modern technology that helps to enjoy comfortable living conditions inside the home. With home automation, data can be instantly collected and passed between devices and analyzed simultaneously. By connecting the home appliances with the internet, they can be easily accessed from anywhere. In the home automation system, settings are feasible through smartphones or other remote-control devices. This paper gives the design and implementation of a new voice- controlled home automation system that uses Google Assistant for giving user’s voice commands as input. It is a low cost and flexible home automation and monitoring system. It enables the user to use a home automation system based on the Internet of Things (IoT). Home appliances like fans and lights can be controlled. The fundamental purpose of this project is to control electronic appliances based on the situational demands of the user.

The spread of enabling technologies for the Internet of Things allows the creation of new scenarios in which home automation plays a significant role. Platforms for smart cities and communities, which must include applications for energy efficiency, health, mobility, security, etc., cannot ignore the use of data gathered directly from homes. In order to implement such scenarios, all the related technological infrastructure and home systems must be able to understand each other and exchange information. In this work, we present a new platform that achieves interoperability between heterogeneous home automation systems. It allows different, incompatible technologies to cooperate inside and outside the home, thus creating a single ecosystem. In order to achieve tins goal, specific problems need to be solved to be able to construct “bridges” between the various home automation networks currently in use. In this regard, some specific solutions adopted for integrating two different technologies (KNX and MyHome) within a home automation platform are illustrated.

Home automation (HA) systems can be considered as an implementation of the internet of everything (IoE) where many devices are linked by intelligent connections in order to improve the quality of life at home. This chapter is dedicated to analyzing current trends and challenges in HA. Energy management, safer homes, and improved control over the house are some of the benefits of HA. However, privacy, security, social disruption, installation/maintenance issues, economic costs, market fragmentation, and low interoperability represent real problems of these IoE solutions. In this regard, the latest proposals in HA try to answer some of these needs with low-cost DIY solutions, wireless solutions, and IP-based HA systems. This chapter proposes a way to deal with the interoperability problem by means of the open-source platform openHAB. It is based on the concept of a home automation bus, an idea that enables the separation of the physical and the functional view of any device, allowing to create a technology-agnostic environment, which is perfect for addressing the interoperability problem.

Being one of the current main technologies, wireless sensor network (WSN) is absolutely critical and plays an increasingly important role in the development of a wide range of data acquisition, processing, and control applications. One interesting challenge application of the WSNs is Internet-based home automation system. The rapid expansion of IPv6, moreover, after IETF defined 6LoWPAN as a technique to apply IPv6 into WSNs standard, added potential for Internet paradigm communication, control, and monitoring of home automation devices from anywhere on the globe. The use of 6LoWPAN communications technology also helps lower expense of the system and decreases complexity of the home automation architecture. When implementing 6LoWPAN-based home automation system, the important feature is long periods of life to support full automation without the need for periodically replacing its batteries. To have this, 6LoWPAN home devices with total energy independence are needed. By using additional components for power management and the implementation of 3 V, 70 mA small polycrystalline silicon solar cell for solar energy harvesting, we can have home automation node for an indefinite amount of life time.

Today IPSec virtual private networks are widely used to establish secure network connections between a pair of hosts, between a pair of security gateways, or between a security gateway and a host. The complexity and variety of rules in an IPSec policy may result in a combination of rules which not only do not provide the required security services, but also compromise the security of communication. Efficiency has not been a major concern for existing IPSec policy conflict detection methods since they process the IPSec rules in an offline way. These methods could be inefficient in dynamic conditions that rules are being updated frequently. The performance of the conflict detection is important in environments where network administrator needs to frequently add or delete rules to existing policy and also he/she needs to know of the possible conflicts which may arise due to policy changes. In this paper we extend the formal model proposed by Hamed [6] for IPSec policy analysis and propose novel and efficient algorithms which can dynamically detect and also resolve the policy conflicts. The results of the implementation and evaluation of our proposed algorithms show significantly better performance for detection and resolution of IPSec policy conflicts, comparing to current work.

Home automation system has achieved an enormous reputation in recent years, as day-to-day life is getting simpler due to the speedy growth of modern technology. Various implemented systems have been offered in the sphere of Home Automation but have apparently failed to provide cost-effective solutions for the same. In this paper, we provide a low-cost smart Home Automation and Security System (HASS) using Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi), and Bluetooth. These materialize the concept of internetworking of smart devices. A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) based on Wi-Fi is considered to monitor and control the smart environment, safety as well as electrical parameters of a smart interconnected home. The Android application-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) on a Smartphone is used to give facility to users for seamless control over the devices in a smart home. It may also consist of home security for example access control and alarm systems. When connected to the Internet, home devices are an important element of the Internet of Things (IoT). Home security includes both the security hardware placed on a property and individuals' personal security practices. Security devices consist of a door locking, alert alarm, lighting, motion detectors, and security camera system. Additionally, several special features include such as ensuring windows are closed, each door is locked, all alarms are activated, and extra keys are not secret outside.

As more and more digital appliances populate our homes, networking them to form a home automation (HA) system not only becomes an option, but almost a necessity. While comfort, security, and energy efficiency can be provided by many existing systems, they all remain complex islands that are difficult to expand and customize. We propose Internet technology to remedy the situation and to become the future solution for HA. For this, we analyze the feasibility of today's Internet technology with regard to traditional HA solutions. Furthermore, we present two case studies that substantiate the benefits of our proposal. As we will show, with IPv6 and 6LoWPAN, a single network serves the classical as well as emerging aspects of HA while concepts from the Web provide benefits for both, developers and users.

Home automation systems can help to reduce energy costs and increase comfort of living by adjusting room temperatures according to schedules, rules, and sensor input. OpenHAB 2 is an open-source home automation framework supporting various home automation technologies and devices. While OpenHAB is well suited for single occupancy homes, large public buildings pose additional challenges. The limited range of wireless home automation technologies requires transceivers distributed across the building. Additionally, control permissions need to be restricted to authorized persons. This work presents OpenHAB-DM, a distributed OpenHAB 2 setup with extensions introducing user authentication, access control, and management tools for decentralized OpenHAB node deployment.

A home automation system means monitoring and controlling various kinds of devices in the home remotely using the Internet of things (IoT). Technologies such as natural language processing techniques, user-friendly visual programming, and machine intelligence programming are already available for home automation. For such systems, the increase in the number of devices often makes users focused on the system’s ability to perform complex or composing tasks. However, some existing natural language processing systems can only perform simple tasks and cannot meet users’ needs. Thus, it is difficult for users to develop the home automation systems they need using visual programming systems because of the large amount of programming knowledge required. Meanwhile, automatic programming without user action can only write a few lines of code and implement little functionality. There are relatively few tools available for generating home automation scripting languages. To address this problem, we propose a practical method for generating executable home automation scripts using Chinese texts. Our method includes the following steps: it extracts critical information from the command sentences in Chinese; it uses first-order logic to check the validity of the extracted information; based on the validation, the correct sentences are mapped into the intermediate language scripts, which can interface with different home platforms. We conducted experiments on Home Assistant, converted intermediate scripts to Home Assistant, and collected 600 scenario descriptions. The experimental results show that the method can automatically generate executable scripts for the Home Assistant platform, and the correct rate was 93.66%.

In 21 century, it is difficult to define the limit of home automation, Recently, based on the advanced digital communication technology and necessity, The scope of the home automation has widened to home energy management, integrated reading of home and home health care etc. beyond the existing home automation. However, those methodologies reduce the efficiency and economy, and make it harder to realize a compact home automation because those methodologies are proposed independently without a unified standard. Therefore, this paper investigates and analyzes these methodologies, and then proposes an advanced home automation system that enables a compact design and improves the efficiency and economics of the home automation system based on the analyzed result.
