Preface

International Conference on Hydrodynamics, Energy and Electric Power System (HEEPS) is an annually held conference, it aims to provide a forum for participants to exchange their experiences, share research results in all aspects about Hydrodynamics, Energy and Electric Power System and discuss the encountered practical challenges and the adopted solutions. The 2024 8th International Conference on Hydrodynamics, Energy and Electric Power System (HEEPS 2024) was held in Beijing, China from June 28th to 30th, 2024. This esteemed conference, as the eighth in its series, continues to serve as a premier platform for researchers, scholars, and industry professionals to converge, share insights, and collaborate on the latest advancements in hydrodynamics, water resources and hydropower engineering, energy systems, and electric power technologies. HEEPS 2024 was organized with the aim of fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and innovation within the rapidly evolving fields of fluid mechanics, energy systems, and power engineering. Building upon the success of the previous seven editions, this conference attracted a diverse and vibrant community of participants from around the world. The event was hosted with the support of esteemed institutions such as the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Universiti Putra Malaysia, further enhancing its international reach and impact. HEEPS 2024 was an outstanding three-day conference and a reference that attracted many remarkable keynote speakers, including: Professor Jizhong Zhu (South China University of Technology, China), Professor Ishak Bin Aris (Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia), Professor Lin Chen (Chinese Academy of Sciences, China), Associate Professor Sohrab Mirsaeidi (Beijing Jiaotong University, China), as well as Assistant Professor Jianxiao Wang (Peking University, China). The program kicked off with a series of keynote lectures delivered by renowned experts in their respective fields, setting the tone for an intellectually stimulating conference. These presentations covered a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from fundamental research in hydrodynamics and fluid mechanics to the latest developments in energy systems and power grid technologies. Besides, during all parts of the conference, the attendees actively interacted with the speakers and each other on specific topics. The conference’s Proceedings of HEEPS 2024 contains the papers accepted and presented at this great conference. All these contributions were carefully reviewed by program committee members and took into consideration the breadth and depth of the research topics that fall into HEEPS scope. On behalf of the conference organizers, we would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to all the editors and reviewers for their tremendous efforts and dedication to the conference. Over the last few decades several innovative ideas have been explored in the energy storage areas, ranging in size, capacity, design complexity, and targeted applications. Some of them are designed for large scale power system applications, others for smallor medium-scale renewable energy or hybrid power systems, while the others are designed to perform short-term energy storage ride through for critical infrastructure (communication systems, hospitals, military facilities, etc.). Energy storage has become an enabling technology for renewable energy applications, grid integration and enhancing power quality and stability in the power transmission and distribution, having a great potential to improve power grid quality and stability and to provide an alternative to fossil fuel-based energy generation. The major constraints for renewable energy penetration are the availability, intermittency, and variability, which can be addressed through energy storage. The energy storage choice depends on specific usage requirements, often incorporating several energy storage systems in order to increase system reliability, capacity, and supply security. In the electric power system, the renewable energy promise lies in its potential to increase grid efficiency, reliability, or in optimizing power flows and supporting variable power supplies. The parameters used in comparisons of various energy storage technologies include efficiency, energy capacity and density, run time, costs, system's response time, lifetime in years and cycles, self-discharge, and maturity of each energy storage technology. The most common energy storage technologies include compressed air, pumped hydro, batteries, fuel cells, flywheels, and super-capacitors. The last four are suitable for the medium scale applications. The chapter discussed energy storage technologies and gives an up to date comparative summary of their performances. After completing this chapter, the readers are able to understand the role, importance, configurations and topologies of energy storage systems, operation principles, characteristics, performances, and operation of major energy storage systems used in power systems, buildings, and industrial facilities. Another benefit is that readers are able to understand the critical role and necessity of energy storage systems in power and renewable energy systems, the differences between large-, mediumand small-scale energy storage systems, and how a system is selected on specific applications based on system characteristics and performances. Major energy storage technologies discussed in this chapter are compressed air energy storage, pumped hydropower storage systems, batteries, flywheels, hydrogen energy storage, fuel cells, supercapacitors, and superconducting energy storage systems. Thermal energy storage systems are covered in detail in the next chapter. This chapter provides comprehensive reviews of the energy storage technologies and gives an up to date comparative summary of their performances, characteristics, and applications.

This volume contains the peer-reviewed proceedings of the 2025 9th International Conference on Hydrodynamics, Energy and Electric Power System (HEEPS 2025), held as an on-site conference in Nanjing, China, from June 20th to June 22nd, 2025. HEEPS 2025 served as a valuable forum for academics and industrial professionals to convene and exchange knowledge in the interconnected fields of Hydrodynamics, Energy, and Electric Power Systems. The conference successfully achieved its primary objectives: fostering research and development activities and facilitating the interchange of scientific information among researchers, developers, engineers, students, and practitioners from across the globe. Due to recent pandemic, 2022 4th International Conference on Energy Systems and Electrical Power (ICESEP 2022) was held virtually online on May 20-22, 2022. The decision to hold the virtual conference was made in compliance with many restrictions and regulations that were imposed by countries around the globe. Such restrictions were made to minimize the risk of people contracting or spreading the COVID-19 through physical contact. There were 120 individuals who attended this online conference, represented many countries.ICESEP 2022 is to bring together innovative academics and industrial experts in the field of energy systems, electrical engineering and power engineering to a common forum. The primary goal of the conference is to promote research and developmental activities in energy engineering, electrical engineering and power engineering and another goal is to promote scientific information interchange between researchers, developers, engineers, students, and practitioners working all around the world.During the conference, the conference model was divided into three sessions, including oral presentations, keynote speeches, and online Q&A discussion. In the first part, some scholars, whose submissions were selected as the excellent papers, were given about 5-10 minutes to perform their oral presentations one by one. Then in the second part, keynote speakers were each allocated 30-45 minutes to hold their speeches. In the second part, we invited four professors as our keynote speakers. Prof. Ismail Musirin, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia. Most of his researches dealt with the algorithms and techniques development in solving problems in Power System involving voltage stability, economic power dispatch, transient stability and so on. The second keynote speakers, Prof. Haslenda, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Malaysia. Prof Haslenda has an impressive list of high-quality publications (more than 200 publications to date according to Scopus) that have attracted over 5200 citations with h-index of 35. Prof. Abdul Hasib Chowdhury, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Bangladeshi. His research interests include power system planning, stability, reliability analysis, contingency and security analysis, vulnerability analysis, power quality analysis etc. Lastly, we were glad to invite Rafiziana Md.Kasmani, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Malaysia. Her research passions are focused on fire engineering, gas and dust explosion, and fire and explosion modelling. Their insightful speeches had triggered heated discussion in the third session of the conference. Every participant praised this conference for disseminating useful and insightful knowledge.The proceedings are a compilation of the accepted papers and represent an interesting outcome of the conference. Topics include but are not limited to the following areas: Energy Saving Technologies, Energy Engineering and Environmental, Renewable Energy Technologies and Systems and other related topics. All the papers have been through rigorous review and process to meet the requirements of international publication standard.We would like to acknowledge all of those who supported ICESEP 2022. The help and contribution of each individual and institution was instrumental in the success of the conference. The integration of multi-energy systems is an important feature of energy internet system. The traditional energy systems, such as electric power, thermal power, gas and other energy systems, are operating separately. All kinds of energy systems have been separated and self-made in a long time. They are managed by different departments, and it is difficult to set up a centralized dispatching agency for operation management, which restricts the development of energy internet system greatly. Block chain technology has the main characteristics of decentralization and transparency. Therefore, a decentralization dispatching and operation control mechanism based on block chain technology for multi-energy fusion system is proposed in this paper. Through the establishment of decentralized dispatching agencies for operation management, it is proposed to share the information of energy supply and demand relationship between different energy systems and different regions in multiple energy systems. An optimal operation model of self-dispatching decision-making is established to obtain the results of energy self-dispatching transaction of each energy demand node. Finally, a simulation is conducted of a multi-energy system, and the calculation results verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the self-scheduling decision-making optimization model proposed in this paper.

Over the past decades, electric power systems (EPSs) have undergone an evolution from an ordinary bulk structure to intelligent flexible systems by way of advanced electronics and control technologies. Moreover, EPS has become a more complex, unstable and nonlinear structure with the integration of distributed energy resources in comparison with traditional power grids. Unlike classical approaches, physical methods, statistical approaches and computer calculation techniques are commonly used to solve EPS problems. Artificial intelligent (AI) techniques have especially been used recently in many fields. Deep neural networks have become increasingly attractive as an AI approach due to their robustness and flexibility in handling nonlinear complex relationships on large scale data sets. Major deep learning concepts addressing some problems in EPS have been reviewed in the present study by a comprehensive literature survey. The practices of deep learning and its combinations are well organized with up-to-date references in various fields such as load forecasting, wind and solar power forecasting, power quality disturbances detection and classifications, fault detection power system equipment, energy security, energy management and energy optimization. Furthermore, the difficulties encountered in implementation and the future trends of this method in EPS are discussed subject to the findings of current studies. It concludes that deep learning has a huge application potential on EPS, due to smart technologies integration that will increase considerably in the future.

Fault mitigation mechanism to pave the way to accommodate over 90% renewable energy in electric power systems

The integration of wind power into power grid will bring some impacts on the multiple subjects of electric power system. Economic impacts of wind power integration on multiple subjects of China’s electric power system were quantitatively assessed from Quasi-public goods property perspective in this paper. Firstly, the Quasi-public goods property of transmission services provided by power grid corporations was elaborated. Secondly, the multiple subjects of China’s electric power system, which include electricity generation enterprises (EGEs), power grid corporations (PGCs), electricity consumers (ECs), and environment, were detailed analyzed. Thirdly, based on the OPF-based nodal price model and transmission service cost allocation model, the economic impact assessment model of wind power integration was built from Quasi-public goods property perspective. Then, the IEEE-24 bus system employed in this paper was introduced according to current status of China’s electric power system, and the modeling of wind turbine was also introduced. Finally, the simulation analysis was performed, and the economic impacts of wind power integration on EGEs, PGCs, ECs and Environment were calculated. The results indicate, from Quasi-public goods property perspective, the wind power integration will bring positive impacts on EGEs, PGCs and Environment, while negative impacts on ECs. The findings can provide references for power system managers, energy planners, and policy makers.

This study proposes a day‐ahead optimal energy dispatch model for integrated energy system based on AC/DC interconnected infrastructure. In the infrastructure, micro‐turbines turn high‐frequency AC power into industrial‐frequency AC power and incorporate it into the energy system's power system. Within the process, waste heat is sent into the waste heat boiler and lithium bromide chillier to interconnect with the heating and cooling systems. DC battery and photovoltaic generations connected with the energy system's power grid through the inverter are used as the flexible energy storage and power generation unit to build an autonomous integrated energy system based on AC/DC interconnection. In the optimisation model, the goal is set as system's lowest daily operation cost and lowest energy consumption. The constraints include system operation constraints and equipment constraints. Simulation results show that by performing the schedule made by the dispatch model, the operating efficiency of various types of AC/DC equipment in the energy system has been improved, energy waste scene has been reduced significantly and energy consumption in the energy system is reduced by 16% compared with other energy supply structure without AC/DC interconnected infrastructure under traditional schedule strategies.

The article presents an analysis of the shipboard practice experience of cadets of the Institute of Naval Forces of the National University “Odesa Maritime Academy” on the training ship of the Republic of Poland. The author of the article, during the review of the subject area of this research, indicated the reserves in the regulatory and legal base of practical training of higher education applicants. Thanks to this, the author of the article, using the method of comparing two approaches to the practical component of the educational process of training future officers for the Naval Forces of the Republic of Poland and Ukraine, discovered the most successful practices and methods that make sense to introduce into the educational process of training a military sailor. The description of the research results was divided into stages in accordance with the logical and slender structure of ship practice on a training ship. This made it possible to carry out a critical analysis of each stage and, using the acquired experience, to outline positive practices in the practical component of cadet training, which will eventually allow to improve the quality of training of cadets specializing in “ship power installations” at the Department of ship energy and electric power systems and at the Institute of the Navy in the future as a whole upon completion of the research, the author of the article, in the conclusions, clearly outlined directions for improving the practical component of the training of cadets of the Institute of the Naval Forces and suggested ways of further research on this topic.

Guest Editorial: Situational awareness of integrated energy systems

Wind power - one the fastest evolving in renewable energy industry. From year to year the share of wind energy in power systems are increasing as well as increasing the size of wind farms. A large-scale wind farms that produce hundreds of megawatts of electricity have a serious impact on the power grid. This paper discusses proposed approaches to modeling wind farms using the Hybrid Real-Time Power System Simulator (HRTSim), to study stability and transient processes in electric power systems.

Changing framework conditions requires adapting financial valuation methods for power plants and energy systems. Up to now newly developed or adapted valuation methods have been validated qualitatively, based on expert statements. This paper presents a structured development process for quantitative validation of valuation methods.The Xerox method for developing a benchmark is used to develop key figures that verify the plausibility of the simplified Valuation Methods. The method for developing a simulation study is used to analyze the requirements of a simulation model whose results can serve as reference values for benchmarking. To support the plausibility of the approach, structured methods were used to create both the benchmark and the simulation model.The process results in the development of a framework that serves as a baseline to perform a benchmark of the different methods. These provide indicators that analyze quantitatively the validity of the valuation methods. Existing simulation models for complex energy systems need to be adapted to provide the required reference values. This needs modification of these models, based on the requirements of the valuation methods. Due to the unsustainability of fossil fuels and the adverse impacts on the environment, along with the rapid growing energy demands, smart energy becomes a new trend. To achieve its carbon peak and neutrality targets in China, smart Energy is the main battlefield, electricity is the main force, and the construction of a new power system is an important content of the construction of smart energy system. The 2nd International Conference on Smart Energy and New Power Systems (SENPS2024) is to promote research and developmental activities in Smart Energy and New Power Systems by creating a platform to promote scientific information interchange between researchers, developers, engineers, students, and practitioners working all around the world. The conference will also make it an ideal platform for people to share views and experiences in related areas. With all contributions from the participants, 23 papers are final accepted from 88 submissions. Those accepted ones are well categorized into four sectors as follows: Smart Energy, Smart Grid, Power Electronics Technologies and New power system. We wish to show our sincere appreciations to Hunan University of Technology, Changsha Normal University, CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co., Ltd which provided various platform to promote this conference with nice service.
