Petri nets with generalized algebra: a comparison
To ease the development of distributed systems, the visual notions for the structural aspects of object-oriented analysis and design should be combined with techniques for handling concurrency and distribution. A novel approach and language for the visual design of distributed software systems is introduced and illustrated by means of an example. The language of OCoNs (Object Coordination Nets) is integrated into the structuring mechanisms of the UML (Unified Modeling Language) standard for object-oriented analysis and design. Such an object-oriented notation is crucial for handling complex software systems and can be extended with the graphical expressive power of Petri nets to also describe concurrency and coordination. The same visual language is used to specify the interfaces and contracts of software components, the resource handling within a component as well as the control flow of services.

DESIGN OF OBJECT-ORIENTED DEBUGGER MODEL BY USING UNIFIED MODELING LANGUAGE
Debugging on computer program is a complex cognitive activity. Although it is complex, it’s still one of the popular issues in computer programming task. It is a difficult task, which is to understand what the error is and how to solve such error? In computer programming the difficulty is to understand the Object-Oriented programming concept together with the programming logic. If the programming logic is incorrect, the program codes will have such error named as logic error and can caused highly maintenance cost. Logic error is a bug in a program that causes it to operate incorrectly, without terminating or crashing the program. It will produce unintended output or other behavior than what we are expecting. Method that use to develop a propose model Object Oriented Debugger is Unified Modeling Language (UML). It is the best choice model and suitable to design the Object Oriented Debugger which will be developed in an object oriented programming environment. The model will provide an ability to capture the characteristics of a system by using notations in the process of designing and implementing the system. The model of Object Oriented Debugger has been successfully implemented. This model has been developed using Unified Approach methodology, which consists of two methods such as Object-Oriented Analysis (OOA) and Object-Oriented Design (OOD). The model developed is to capture the structure and behavior of the Object Oriented Debugger by using the UML diagram. The model also can ease the readability of the documentation for the maintenance purposes. The design of the Object Oriented Debugger Model has been developed using the UML notation. It’s consisting of two parts that are object-oriented analysis and object-oriented design. All the developing and designing are based on the model in UML.

In this paper we present the original method of intensive hands-on training in Object-oriented Analysis and Design (OOA/OOD) with the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The method has been successfully used by the authors for three years. During the training, the students: go through the communication problems that are typical for large software development projects obtain the successful experience of applying UML to overcome these problems. The essence of the method is that a team of students is supposed to design a software system. They have several hours to complete the task. During this timeframe verbal and written communication is forbidden, and the UML is the only allowed language. This training is a kind of experiment for students -- they are to discover whether UML is "a real language" that is suitable and beneficial for a project team. The training was successfully delivered more than ten times in both academic and corporate environments and generated positive feedback from students and customers.

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is becoming widely used for software and database modeling, and has been accepted by the Object Management Group as a standard language for object-oriented analysis and design. For data modeling purposes, UML includes class diagrams, that may be annotated with expressions in a textual constraint language. Although facilitating the transition to object-oriented code, UML’s implementation concerns render it less suitable for developing and validating a conceptual model with domain experts. This defect can be remedied by using a fact-oriented approach for the conceptual modeling, from which UML class diagrams may be derived. Object-Role Modeling (ORM) is currently the most popular fact-oriented approach to data modeling. This paper examines the relative strengths and weaknesses of ORM and UML for data modeling, and indicates how models in one notation can be translated into the other.Request access from your librarian to read this article's full text.
Read moreA prototype development of ET rescue robot by using a UML
This article proposes a prototype development of ET (Embedded technology) rescue robot that follows an object-oriented analysis and design methodology (OOADM) by using a UML (Unified modeling language) as a tool in the process. The idea is to improve the robot application development process to be efficient, rapid, and conformable with the standard by using the UML. The ET rescue robot prototype comprises of the two systems; a robot control system and a victim discovering system. The robot operation control is performed by a computer that interconnects the robot via a Bluetooth network. The operator monitors the robot operation by using video, sound, and temperature data that are captured through a camera, sound sensor, and temperature sensor installed on the robot to discover the victim, respectively. The robot was tested and experimented under the environment imitated the victim discovery in disastrous scenario. The result reflected that the prototype of ET rescue robot can be developed in the application level by following the OOADM as specified in the requirements.
Read moreA formal approach in robot development process using a UML model
Recently, a formal development process of robot in an application level has not been sufficiently encouraged and promoted. This leads an insufficient procedure to improve the robot development process in the application level. This article introduces an object-oriented analysis and design methodology (OOADM) that is applicable to the robot development process, i.e., a field sensing robot, in the application level. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is used as a tool for analysis and design of the field sensing robot. The Mindstorms Lego model RCX is deployed as the main robot hardware and the C++ programming language is employed as the software tool for implementing the field sensing robot application. The tasks of robot are defined to move across the fields, to avoid the obstacles, and to reach the end point, according to the requirement. The robot employs the light sensor to detect the field surfaces in order to specify different types of movement, i.e., moving on a normal surface, increasing and reducing speed across a slop surface, and moving within a boundary. In addition, the robot uses the touch sensors to detect the obstacles during its movement toward the end point and to dodge the obstacles when hitting them. The robot operation is completed when the end point is detected. By following the formal standard development process using the UML model, the application of robot can be implemented rapidly and efficiently.
Read moreA UML Profile for Agent-Based Development
In recent years, agent-based systems have received considerable attention in both academia and industry. The agent oriented paradigm can be considered a natural extension to the object oriented (OO) paradigm. In spite of the fact that there are many OO analysis and design methods, there is very little work reported on design and analysis of agent-based systems. Agents differ from objects in many issues which requires special modeling elements. In this paper, we propose a software engineering process for agent-based systems based on existing object-oriented software engineering concepts. We extend the Unified Modeling Language (UML) to model agents (static and mobile).

A Strongly Consistent Transformation from UML Interactions to PEPA Nets
A seamless approach suitable for both design and analysis of mobile and distributed software systems is a challenge. In this paper we provide a new constructive approach that links interaction diagrams in UML to PEPA nets, a performance modelling technique which offers capabilities for capturing notions such as location, synchronisation and message passing. Our formally defined transformation is defined in such a way that a PEPA net model realises the same language as a given Interaction Overview Diagram in UML. Furthermore, the languages are strongly consistent, in other words, there is a one-to-one correspondence between the traces of both models.KeywordsBasic RegionLocal TransitionActivity DiagramSequential CompositionConcurrency LevelThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. Read moreContext-Based Visual Design Language for Shape Generation
Design development is an expensive process and time consuming. A design language system assists design development. The system is highly used to investigate design characteristics in many design studies. The high volume of research interprets it as design elements and principles analysis to deliver consistent visual aesthetics. The absences of meaning and context significantly impact the quality of visual design communication and create design ambiguities. To fulfil the mentioned issues, this research extends harmonised shape grammar (HSG) to develop a context-based visual design language (CVD). The proposed framework provides semantics and pragmatics levels of analysis to bring meaning and context to a visual design communication. Visual communication and language communication share the similarity in fundamental concepts. A context-based visual design language adopts grammatical design and natural language processing approaches to analyse visual communication requirements. Grammatical design provides generative design development when natural language processing analyses levels of language communication. In linguistics, morphological units (morphemes) form a vocabulary. Vocabularies construct a sentence following a grammar structure. A semantically well-formed sentence provides meaning. Meaningful sentences combine pragmatically to achieve a successful communication. In the design aspect, one must speak a language of design. However, speaking does not guarantee a successful communication. This research aims at defining a framework to create a set of meaningful visual design language in order to achieve a visual communication correspondingly to the way natural language can in linguistics.

With the growth of complexity in the software system, to deliver reliable software products on time becomes a critical issue. Many software reliability growth models (SRGMs) have been proposed in the past three decades. However, most software reliability assessment processes and parameter estimations of models depend on the computations of the general-purposed numerical software. In this paper, we will present a powerful computer-aided reliability assessment tool for software based on object-oriented analysis and design-CARATS. CARATS can use both traditional SRGMs and neural-network methods to assess software reliability. This would greatly help project managers to make decisions during software development life cycle. Due to the characteristics of the special-purposed and object-oriented design, CARATS can analyze the software reliability easily, and is also more flexible to adopt different SRGMs than other existing software reliability analysis tools.
