The education of students in the area of telecommunications systems engineering is of rising significance as global economies become ever more reliant upon telecommunications technologies and services. Notwithstanding its broad-based origins from within electrical engineering, the study of telecommunications systems is today recognized as an academic discipline in its own right. The University of Oklahoma (OU) - Tulsa is one of a select few that offers a Master of Science degree in Telecommunications Systems under the aegis of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The degree has been designed with a common set of core courses: Telecommunications Industry Overview, Telecommunications Technology, Network Design and Management, Telecommunications Laboratory, and Professional Project. In addition, students may choose technical electives from among electrical and computer engineering, computer science, mathematics, and telecommunications systems courses. Students may also choose up to six credit hours of approved elective courses in relevant disciplines such as finance, telecommunications management, economics, and industrial engineering. A key resource supporting the program is the Telecommunications Interoperability Laboratory 1 , a facility designed to provide students with unmatched access to carrier-grade telecommunications technologies. Students entering the program are expected to have undergraduate preparation in electrical and computer engineering. This paper describes the curriculum and program goals, as well as the motivation behind their development.

A short review on queuing theory as a deterministic tool in sustainable telecommunication system

This article quantifies the seismic performance of interdependent electric power and telecommunication systems, while also identifying variables with the highest impact on design. We introduce interdependent power and telecommunication models, which probabilistically simulate the physical dependency of telecommunication systems on power via interdependent adjacency and coupling strength, while a topology observability analysis quantifies the cyber dependency of the power system on telecommunications. We also use new functionality-based performance measures, including data congestion in telecommunications and partial observability in power systems, given communication demands upsurging after earthquakes. As an application, our methodology assesses the performance of stylized power and telecommunication systems in Shelby County, TN. Results show that neglecting retrials, congestion, and power interdependency lead to significant overestimation of the performance of telecommunication systems, particularly at low-to-medium hazard levels. Sensitivity results also reveal that decreasing the strength of coupling across systems is one of the most effective ways to improve the seismic performance of evolving cyber-physical systems, particularly when increasing observability in the power system through telecommunication end offices with richer data flow pathways.

A method for QoE parameters prediction in an overall telecommunication system, consisting users and telecommunication network, based on QoS indicators’ values prediction, is overviewed. Four normalization techniques are discussed. An indicators’ Scale Normalization is proposed. Numerical illustrationis presented.

Various methods for evaluating innovative activity in telecommunication systems and the principles for constructing algorithms for such an assessment are considered. Criteria of innovative activity, taking into account not only the quality assessment, but also the main accompanying factors, reflecting the essence of the assessment of innovation activity in general and telecommunications networks in particular, are singled out. The distribution of criteria for assessing innovation activity at different levels has been carried out. Expressions for determining the numerical values of these criteria are justified. An algorithm for evaluating innovative technologies in telecommunication systems is developed, based on the identification of the attendant factors that reflect the essence of innovation activity. The algorithm is presented by a set of formulas for assessing the quality, relevance and uniqueness of innovative technology, as well as the sequence of their definition.

Due to the tremendous growth in the evolution of telecommunication system and wireless networks, recent developments in telecommunication system and wireless communication technologies and mobile networks has posed various challenges to the researchers in the field of performance modelling. These challenges require effective performance evaluation tools, techniques and methodologies to design new protocols and robust solutions before a global and wide-scale integrated broadband infrastructure of convergent multi-service networks can be established towards the next generation of telecommunication system with efficient support of multimedia applications. As a result, performance modelling and evaluation has gained increasing importance. This special issue solicits papers on advances in the analytical and simulation based modelling and evaluation of new challenges in the telecommunication systems. The design and analysis of cost effective survivable telecommunication networks is a very important problem. We study techniques for visualizing survivable telecommunication networks. The visualization of telecommunication networks is very useful in aiding the design process of minimum cost networks and the management of network operations. We present several linear time algorithms for drawing telecommunication networks (with optimal area) so that important properties are displayed. Given a ring cover of a network, our algorithms display it in such a way that rings are easily identifiable and possible problems can be spotted by network designers.

It is shown that it is advisable to use optical fibers as a physical medium for the information transmission in the construction of modern telecommunication systems and networks of railway transport. It is determined that multi-mode and single-mode optical fibers are used to create the physical medium of the telecommunication infrastructure of railway transport. The design and profiles of refractive indices of optical fibers are given. It is shown that the main parameters of optical fiber transmission are attenuation, dispersion (bandwidth) and nonlinear distortions. The main causes of optical signal attenuation are absorption of radiation by optical fiber material, Rayleigh scattering and radiation loss. It is determined that the dispersion of optical signals consists of inter-mode dispersion, chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion. It is shown that nonlinear effects in optical fiber can be divided into scattering effects and effects related to changes in the refractive index depending on the radiation intensity. The influence of optical fiber transmission parameters on the quality of service provision in the railway telecommunication infrastructure has been analyzed. Transparency windows and spectral ranges for optical fibers used in various telecommunication technologies are considered. The classification of single-mode and multi-mode optical fibers according to ITU-T recommendations is presented. The features of each class of optical fibers are analyzed. The fields of application of optical fibers of different classes in the construction of modern telecommunication systems and networks of railway transport are presented.

Expert systems in telecommunications

The semantic uncertainties between the basic concepts in the field of cybersecurity significantly narrow the range and reduce the effectiveness of scientific research on methods of analysis and forecasting, for example, APT cyberattacks or the development of security complexes based on formal models of proof their effectiveness. The direction of the possible overcoming of the problem is the development of a conceptual model of cyberspace and cybersecurity, which reduces the level of possible uncertainties in describing various complex situations in cyberspace due to the use of special tools terminology, graphics, and mathematical formalization. The beginning of the research - the selected statement: the physical basis of cyberspace are information and telecommunication systems (ITS). The analysis of the information processes of such systems was carried out on the basis of the attributive-transfer approach to the essence of information. It defines “information” how to get the properties (attributes) of the object, reflecting the properties of another object. Electronic devices and physical environments for signal transmission constitute the technological basis of the ITS. Discrete electronic and electromagnetic signals circulating between electronic devices allow the formation of information, transform it and transmit it in space at different distances. Through various sets of electronic devices and signals in the ITS, various information processing technologies are implemented. They provide ITS users with various information services. Users of ITS can be people or technical systems (devices). According to the results of the analysis, a conceptual model of cyberspace and cybersecurity has been developed. The model consists of: 1) a set of interconnected basic terms that reflect the essence of information processes in the ITS. Due to these terms, synthesized definitions for the terms “cyberspace” and “cybersecurity”; 2) graphic model of cyberspace, which explains the ratio of its components; 3) mathematical model of cyberspace is a collection of mathematical constructions based on the theory of sets that specify the nature of the relationship between components of cyberspace. Cyberspace models have developed mathematical cybersecurity criteria for the cyberspace segment. The model also makes it possible to significantly simplify the process of analyzing APT attacks or complex security processes in cyberspace.

Conversions between optical and electronic signals is a major bottleneck in the physical layer of today's telecommunications networks. The author reports on a development that promises to take yet more electronics out of communications. The development is known as the Multi-Wavelength Transport Network (MWTN) project. The author describes the architecture of the MWTN optical node and in particular the InP switch. The control and management of an MWTN node is also described. The progress of the project is discussed.

The purpose of the article is to develop a model for managing a corporate trading system and define the principles that ensure its use. Methodology. The research methodology is based on the dialectical and systemic approach, i.e., the activities of the components of the business system are considered in their interconnection and interdependence. The methods of multidimensional logic, formalisation, structural synthesis, modelling and scientific generalisation are used to develop the management model of the business system. Results. The evolution of the business trading system reflects changes in space and time. It is impossible to change the scale of its activities without introducing managerial and organisational innovations. Corporate management is based on a three-level hierarchical structure: shareholders, board of directors and top management. The effectiveness of corporate management in commerce is determined by the degree of centralisation of management decisions. Corporate management and its senior executives ensure the achievement of the system's objectives, control and plan its development. A unified strategic management centre carries out strategic management of business units and internal coordination of actions, change management, while at the same time giving them the right to independent operational management. Separation of strategic and operational management subsystems allows to create a management system combining strategic objectives and performance parameters. Practical implications. The practical results can serve as a basis for further research on ways to improve the strategic and operational management of business units that are part of the corporate trading system, taking into account changes in the internal and external environment. Value/Originality. The proposed model of corporate trading system management allows to better understand the essence of the management process, provides strategic management of their activities from a single strategic management centre and gives the right to independent operational management.

Due to the exponential growth in the Internet data traffic, the volume of data over the telecommunications network has increased rapidly. The required capacity of the transport (transmission) links must also increase, motivating work on faster communication channels. Among all the available transmission media, optical fiber achieves highest bandwidth with the lowest loss. Thus, the development of telecommunication transport networks has been accelerated, resulting in the Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) standards. The SONET OC-192, a standard for 10-Gb/s serial links, has been well established.

In this presentation we will review the main challenges facing the area of telecommunication systems and networks today. We will be covering issues in the areas of optical and wireless systems and networks. Study cases of attempts to produce some solutions will be discussed. Future trends in these areas will be provided.
