A Novel PSOEDE Algorithm for Vehicle Scheduling Problem in Public Transportation

We study a seat allocation problem in public transportation with potential seating restrictions. We first demonstrate that the commonly used procedure suffers from significant drawbacks, including welfare losses due to unfilled seats. We then introduce a new mechanism that addresses these deficiencies while also satisfying several other desirable properties under various seating restrictions. We also show that our proposed mechanism ensures that the maximum number of agents are seated while respecting agents' preferences and priority rankings.

In this paper, a multi-objective scenario based mathematical model is presented for the capacitated hub location problem in public transportation considering economic and investment aspects. Three objective functions are regarded in the presented mathematical model. The first one aims to minimise the total costs considering the possibility of investing the unused budget at each period. The second one aims to minimise the total processing time in the hub network at each period. The last one aims to minimise the maximum distance between each pair of origin-destination nodes in the network. To solve the model, three multi-objective meta-heuristic algorithms are developed, namely S metric selection evolutionary multi-objective optimisation algorithm (SMS-EMOA), multi-objective imperialist competitive algorithm (MOICA) and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). Finally, developed algorithms are compared to each other based on several comparison measures using a relatively novel statistical approach.

With the accelerating industrialization and urbanization in China, the pressure on resources and environment is serious. To promote development of low carbon, to alleviate the pressure on resources and environment, improve the quality and efficiency, developments in a new direction are being conducted. Rail transit as a public transport system is an important part of urban transportation, called aorta. Low carbon economic development is the most effective booster for the public transport system. Rail transit has several advantages namely environmental protection, energy saving, “green traffic”. A vigorous development in rail transit consequently promotes the development of effective ways of using low carbon and also improves the ability of testing and aids in government's control in urban transportation system. At present, rail transport priority strategy is chosen as the consensus for urban development in nearly thirty cities has been implemented. Since 2006 Xi'an subway construction has been in full swing and was began after the fourth anniversary of the first line. For nearly six dynasties the geographical center of China was Beijing and Shanghai, Xi'an has been approved as a center. A third country as an international metropolis would become the future “triangle”. for the development of metropolis circle and super speed the prospect of the rail transit as public transport is required. This is essential for passengers that are 50% of the population. The rail transit system can certainly make Xi'an, the third international metropolis in the next 10 years. All that is to be followed is the Chinese practice of urban rail transit construction. Subways and light rails reflect the current high science and technology development level, and solve the fundamental problem of urban public transportation. Xi'an subway's sustainable development from being a historical city to a future metropolis has important significance.

We present a game-theoretic model for the line planning problem in public transportation, in which each line acts as player. Each player aims to minimize its own delay, which is dependent on the traffic load along its edges. We show that there exists a line plan at equilibrium, which minimizes the probability of delays of the transportation system. This result is achieved by showing that a potential function exists. Numerical results using close-to-real world data in the LinTim framework clearly show that our method indeed produces delay-resistant line concepts.

The thesis proposes novel solution approaches to solve the vehicle scheduling problem (VSP) in transportation related businesses. The problem requires assigning a specified set of tasks to available vehicles in order to minimize the operational cost. The large-sized instances of the VSP are difficult to solve in given time. In the thesis, the VSPs in the recreational vehicle rental business and in public transit operations have been successfully solved. The approaches have been validated using real-life as well as difficult-to-solve theoretically constructed data. The proposed approaches outperform existing solution methods in terms of the solution time and the solution quality.

A comparison of different solution approaches to the vehicle scheduling problem in a practical case

Social sites on the World Wide Web allow increased sharing of ideas and problems. Such online networking includes the ability to report public transport problems and get support for campaigns to improve specific aspects of public transport. One site that offers such a facility provided access to its data on problems that were reported over a 13 month period. These were assessed and comparisons were made to see if those campaigns that got the most support were inherently different to the campaigns that received little support, and to investigate the types of problems that were reported online. Whilst definitive answers cannot be given, there are some suggestions that come out of the analysis and the overall impact on improving public transport accessibility and usability is discussed.

Separation of cycle inequalities in periodic timetabling

Passengers using public transport systems often experience waiting times when transferring between two scheduled services. In this paper we propose a planning approach that seeks to obtain a favourable trade-off between the two contrasting objectives, passenger service and operating cost, by modifying the timetable. The planning approach is referred to as the simultaneous vehicle scheduling and passenger service problem (SVSPSP). The SVSPSP is modelled as an integer programming problem and solved using a large neighborhood search metaheuristic. The proposed framework is tested on data inspired by the express-bus network in the Greater Copenhagen area. The results are encouraging and indicate a potential decrease of passenger transfer waiting times in the network of up to 20%, with the vehicle scheduling costs remaining mostly unaffected.

One of the biggest challenges for modern metropolises is the problem of public transportation. Barriers to the development of urban transport, the expansion of private vehicles, congestion of beehives, traffic jams, parking problems, and the negative impacts of transport on the environment are causing an increase in interest in shared micromobility. Electric scooters are one of these innovative solutions. This article aims to construct a model for the acceptance of electric scooters among students. The authors employed the technology acceptance model, and used the SmartPLS 4. Program to reconstruct the model. The basis of the model was a CAWI survey on a sample of 442 students. On this basis, the study verified the hypotheses on the relationships between the factors influencing the acceptance of electric scooters: demographic characteristics, perceived usefulness, ease of use, attitudes towards this solution, and behavioral intentions.

The Vehicle Scheduling Problem is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem that emerges in mobility and transportation sectors. The heterogeneous fleet with multiple depots extension arises in major urban public transportation companies due to different demands throughout the day and some restrictions in the use of different vehicle types. This extension introduces complexity to the problem and makes the known deterministic methods unable to solve it efficiently. This paper describes an approach to create a comprehensive model to represent the Multiple Depot Vehicle Scheduling Problem as an Asymmetric Traveling Salesman Problem. To solve the A-TSP problem an Ant Colony based meta-heuristic was developed. The results achieved on solving problems from a Portuguese major public transportation planning database show the usefulness of the proposed approach.

A probabilistic model for vehicle scheduling based on stochastic trip times

Статтю присвячено значенню підприємств комунального транспорту у формуванні та розвитку інвестиційної активності нашої держави. Визначені різні теоретичні підходи до трактування поняття «інвестиційна активність». Доведено, що інвестиційна активність підприємств комунального транспорту – це інтенсивність залучення додаткових коштів в об’єкти комунальної транспортної інфраструктури. Проаналізовано динаміку перевезень пасажирів за видами транспорту загального користування по Україні і виявлено їх значну роль у житті кожного українського міста. В статті також визначено ключові перешкоди в розвитку інвестиційної активності громадського комунального транспорту України, до числа яких належать територіальні, організаційні, операційні і фінансові. Виявлено передумови їх виникнення, а також оцінено можливості їх прояву. Наприкінці роботи систематизовані напрями активізації інвестиційної активності комунального транспорту в Україні: формування інструментарію державно-приватного партнерства, використання механізму фінансового лізингу для оновлення парку вагонів електротранспорту, впровадження автоматизованих систем контролю проїзду (АСКП), реструктуризація транспортних підприємств шляхом їх акціонування, впровадження адресного субсидування пасажирів, впровадження системи інтермодальних пасажирських перевезень, впровадження автоматизованих систем диспетчерського регулювання та навігації. Отже, забезпечуючи комплексну та одночасну реалізацію зазначених заходів, буде можливим реальне сприяння суттєвому поліпшенню стану справ такої соціо-економіко-екологічної сфери народного господарства, як громадський комунальний транспорт. Статья посвящена значению предприятий коммунального транспорта в формировании и развитии инвестиционной активности нашего государства. Определены различные теоретические подходы к трактовке понятия «инвестиционная активность». Доказано, что инвестиционная активность предприятий коммунального транспорта - это интенсивность привлечения дополнительных средств в объекты коммунальной транспортной инфраструктуры. Проанализирована динамика перевозок пассажиров по видам транспорта общего пользования по Украине и выявлена их значительная роль в жизни каждого украинского города. В статье также определены ключевые проблемы в развитии инвестиционной активности общественного коммунального транспорта Украины, к числу которых относятся территориальные, организационные, операционные и финансовые. Выявлены предпосылки их возникновения, а также оценены возможности их проявления. В конце работы систематизированы направления активизации инвестиционной активности коммунального транспорта в Украине: формирование инструментария государственно-частного партнерства, использование механизма финансового лизинга для обновления парка вагонов электротранспорта, внедрение автоматизированных систем контроля проезда (АСКП), реструктуризация транспортных предприятий путем их акционирования, внедрения адресного субсидирования пассажиров, внедрение системы интермодальных пассажирских перевозок, внедрение автоматизированных систем диспетчерского регулирования и навигации. Таким образом, обеспечивая комплексную и одновременную реализацию указанных мероприятий, будет возможным реальное содействие существенному улучшению состояния дел такой социо-экономико-экологической сферы народного хозяйства, как общественный коммунальный транспорт. This article is dedicated to the importance of transport utilities in the formation and development of activities of our country. Defined different theoretical approaches to the interpretation of the term investment activity. It is proved that activity utilities transport - is the intensity of additional funds into objects of communal transport infrastructure. The dynamics of passenger transportation modes of public transport in Ukraine and found their significant role in the life of every Ukrainian city. The paper also identifies key problems of public utilities Transport of Ukraine, which include territorial, organizational, operational and financial. Revealed conditions of their occurrence, and evaluated their possible manifestation. At the end of systematic trends of reforming the current system of municipal transport in Ukraine: forming tools PPP, usage of machinery financial leasing for renovating the electric cars, the introduction of automated control systems fare (ASKP), restructuring transportation companies through their shareholding, introducing targeted subsidies passengers introduction of intermodal passenger transport, the introduction of automated dispatch control and navigation. Thus, providing a comprehensive and simultaneous implementation of these measures will be possible to promote real substantial improvements of such socio-economic and environmental spheres of the economy, as public municipal transport

This work addresses the multiple-depot vehicle and crew scheduling problem (MDVCSP). In MDVCSP, we deal with two NP-hard problems in an integrated way: the multiple-depot vehicle scheduling problem (MDVSP) and the crew scheduling problem (CSP). For solving the MDVCSP, we define the vehicles’ operational routine and the workdays of the crews of a public bus transport system with multiple depots. Given the difficulty of solving real-world instances of the MDVCSP using exact mathematical methods, we propose a matheuristic algorithm for solving it. This matheuristic algorithm combines two strategies into an iterated local search (ILS) based framework: a branch-and-bound algorithm for solving the MDVSP and a variable neighborhood descent (VND) based algorithm for treating the associated CSPs. We compared the proposed ILS-MDVCSP with five approaches in the literature that use the same benchmark test instances. We also solved a real-world problem of one of Brazil’s largest cities. For this problem, we proposed a formulation based on a time-space network to address the MDVSP subproblem. The results obtained showed the effectiveness of ILS-MDVCSP, mainly to deal with real-world and large-scale problems. The algorithm was able to solve the largest instances from the literature, for which there was no reported solution. Regarding the running time, as the instances’ size increases, our approach becomes substantially less costly than the others from the literature. For the Brazilian instances, the ILS-MDVCSP saved, on average, the use of 12 vehicles per day and reduced by up to 15% the daily operational time of the vehicles.

This paper proposes a new variant of teaching learning based optimization (TLBO) algorithm for solving global optimization problems to improve the shortcoming of TLBO. The proposed algorithm uses the genetic crossover and mutation strategies for improving the search mechanism and convergence rate. Genetic mutation strategy is applied in teacher phase of TLBO algorithm for improving the mean knowledge of leaners. While, Crossover strategy is applied in learner phase of TLBO algorithm to find good learner. The results are taken on six well known benchmark test functions. From results, it is observed that the proposed algorithm provides more optimized results in comparison to same class of algorithms.
