Data management for visual information systems

A Visual Information System represents a radical departure from the rigid text-in/text out paradigm of conventional Information Systems. It significantly enlarges the applications scope of information systems and typically sits on top of a general purpose multimedia operating system supported by multimedia hardware and a high bandwidth network. Unlike a conventional Information System, the types of storage and I/O devices required to support a Visual Information System generally include a much greater variety of facilities for efficient visual information presentation and visualisation. Apart from providing multi-mode delivery, the effective correlation between information of the same media type and information belonging to different media types forms an integral part of such systems. The essential building blocks of a Visual Information System are described, and the management of different types of information contents are discussed.KeywordsDatabase Management SystemQuery ModelVisual QueryVideo Object PlaneCriminal ProfileThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. Visual illusions occur around us all the time, which present in nature and appear when you least expect it. It is well known that visual illusions can have a dramatic effect upon our visual perception of an object 's size and position. However, whether visual illusions have a similar influence on visual guided action or not, it remains the subject of much debate. The purpose of this study is to explore whether the visual information used to identify and categorize an object would be similar to the visual information used to plan and control visually guided movements directed toward that object. The outcome of this study will be helpful for designers to understand our visual information system and apply that knowledge to the design practice. In order to achieve the purpose of this study mentioned above, three visual illusions as the experiment's apparatus are applied to examine the relative effect of visual illusions on both the visual perceived center of an object and the position of a grasp on that object when a balanced lift is required. The results of the experiment show that (1) Illusions influence both the perceived and the grasped estimates of the center position, but the grasp center is more veridical; (2) Judd-illusion, one of the three visual illusions, has a bigger degree of effect than two other illusions on both the perceived and the grasped estimates of the center position; (3) By providing the participants with a mean to guide their visual perception of these illusions, the errors from the estimation of the center position can be significantly reduced.

About Our Authors

It is proposed the visual information structures formation model for the visual information systems processing. Unlike the known models this model simultaneously takes into account the transformation of geospatial coordinates into coordinates of the visual information structure and the transformation of brightness. Also provides the ability to correctly process and analyze the visual information structures in the visual information systems.

Objective: the purpose of the entire work is to help system analysts involved in assessing the quality of information sys tems (IS) operation during their creation, operation, modernization, development, to form the appearance of a comprehensive probabilistic prediction methodology applicable in the interests of ensuring quality and safety, justifying acceptable risks, identifying significant threats and supporting the adoption of scientifically rational system decisions to proactively counter threats in IS life cycle. The purpose of the 3rd part of the work is to complete the detailing of the general methodological provisions on the probabilistic prediction of the quality of IS operation quality (taking into account the enlarged description of the approach in the 1st part of the article [1] and the presentation of the basics of detailing modeling using «black boxes» in the 2nd part of the article [2]) by proposing: • the formalization of complex modeled systems consisting of parallel-sequential structures formed from «black boxes» and combined using logical connections «AND», «OR»; • the methods of system analysis of the IS operation quality; • the main components of the appearance of a comprehensive methodology for the probabilistic predicting IS operation quality, used by system analysts in the interests of ensuring quality and safety, justifying acceptable risks, identifying significant threats and supporting the adoption of scientifically based system decisions to proactively counter threats in the life cycle of specific IS. Research methods include: methods of probability theory, methods of system analysis. The modeled system is formally represented by «black boxes» and complex systems in the form of parallel-sequential structures formed from «black boxes» combined using logical connections «AND», «OR». The obtained results of mathematical modeling are used in the interpretation of the original IS, in the interests of which the corresponding calculations are carried out. The result of the work as a whole is: based on the research results presented in [1, 2], methodological provisions have been created that form the main components of the appearance of a complex methodology for probabilistic prediction of IS operation quality in accordance with GOST R 59341-2021 «System engineering. Protection of information in system information management process». The use of the proposed methodological provisions is intended to help system analysts form the appearance of a versatile complex methodology of probabilistic prediction, applicable in the interests of ensuring quality and safety, justifying acceptable risks, identifying significant threats and supporting the adoption of scientifically sound system decisions to proactively counter threats in the life cycle of specific IS. Scientific novelty of the work: with the widespread introduction of modern information technology tools and systems, the problems associated with a comprehensive study of the IS operation quality remain acutely relevant. Despite the fact that many system engineering standards have appeared that recommend the use of probabilistic system analysis for various types of systems, in practice, the formation of a set of techniques applicable to predicting quality measures, justifying acceptable risks, identifying significant threats and supporting the adoption of scientifically sound system decisions in IS life cycle causes practical difficulties for system analysts. These difficulties and the use of subjective assessments are related not only to the versatility of the very concept of IS operation quality, but also to the complexity of mathematical formalization, taking into account the specifics of each system. As a result, many important aspects are beyond the analyst's field of consideration, specific quality measures turn out to be incommensurable on a single quantitative scale, and the inverse analytical tasks of proactive threat management in IS life cycle and constituent elements are not solved. I.e., in practice, there is a contradiction between the needs for system analysis of IS and the possibilities for solving urgent problems of system analysis. To overcome this contradiction, the proposed methodological provisions formulate the general purpose of IS operation in various areas applications – to ensure the reliability and timeliness of providing the necessary information, completeness, validity and safety of the information used for subsequent intended use. The main proposed components of the complex methodology of probabilistic prediction of IS operation quality have determined the scientific novelty of this work, focused precisely on achieving this general formulated goal of IS operation.

Introduction The OSH Barometer is a visual information system on status and trends of OSH in the EU. The system contains data from governmental sources, statistical authorities, European surveys and research. The included indicators are updated on a regular basis, while apart from data referring to previous years, a number of forecasted indicators referring to the year 2035 are included. Methods The tool has four sections: “Generic information”, “Steering of OSH”, “OSH outcomes and working conditions”, and “OSH infrastructure and monitoring capacity”. These four sections contain indicators such as: • OSH authorities • Economic and sector profile • Workforce profile • National strategies • Regulation • Social dialogue and Worker involvement • Work accidents • Work related diseases • Health perception of workers • Working conditions and prevention • Enforcement capacity Results In total, more than 90 single datasets (sub-indicators) are included. Every data set covers all EU Member States and provides EU27 average values as well. Discussion The OSH Barometer offers filtering and adaptation to the information needs of the users. It also allows comparison between Member States and the EU-average. The tool went live in 2020 but is regularly updated with the addition of new features and indicators. Included data are used for the development of analytical reports, with explanatory and analytical descriptions of status, trends that reach back between 10 and 25 years, and forecasts. Conclusion This exercise can provide knowledge and insights for safer and healthier work, in an ever-changing world of work, to wider audiences.

Although conventionally designed information systems provide information via a computerised display, in everyday life, our actions are informed by information obtained from a variety of places in a variety of ways. Drawing on conventional information systems (IS), human–computer interaction (HCI), ecological psychology and sociology and building on existing work on situated information systems, this article explores the idea of obtaining information from the environment to accomplish workplace activity in a routine way. A typology of conceptually distinct sources of information is presented and this has implications for what we understand information systems to be. Just as Hutchins (1995) refers to his conception of cognition as ‘cognition in the wild’, so we can conceive of situated information systems ‘in the wild’ rather than confined to computational space. The argument with respect to information systems analysis and design is that abstract representations should not be the only option considered. Using the information source that is most appropriate given the particular context of the actor and the environment will better support the accomplishment of collective routines, increasing efficiency and effectiveness.

In the recent years, and also considering the rapid development of the urbanization, China has set up the higher requirements for modern urban planning concepts, methods, and means. Under the support of advanced technologies, it has become an inevitable trend to then make the full use of information technology to improve the design and management of city planning. Geographic information system (GIS) is a specific extremely essential spatial information system. It is a complex platform that collects, stores, manages, calculates, analyzes, displays, and describes geographical distribution data in all or part of the Earth's surface (including the atmosphere) space with the proper integration of the information processing and computer vision algorithms. In this paper, we apply the GIS and multimedia information systems to study the evaluation of local urbanization in Zhejiang. The multimedia system is designed to assist the GIS and the visualized model is presented to validate the proposed method. The results prove that the proposed is efficient.

William Kettinger and Donald Marchand attempt to operationalize the constructs that together help define the ‘knowing organization’. Their intention to develop a construct that measures the capability of companies to manage their information is a substantial undertaking. According to the life cycle of information management, ‘information management practices’ is defined as a second order construct that involves sensing, collecting, organizing, processing, and maintaining information to enhance its use for decision making. The authors develop measures for these five sub-capabilities. Empirical data were collected from multinational firms to test the construct with confirmatory factor analysis used as the major method for statistical analysis. The authors have created a model of information use and conducted an extensive evaluation across a broad array of institutions to validate this measure of information management practices. Considering that effective information management and usage have become an asset for firms to achieve competitive advantage and that there is no existing comprehensive measurement for this important capability, this paper is valuable to practitioners and academics since it can be used to compare firms' information management capabilities. This paper lays a foundation towards the improvement of organizational use of information. Kweku-Muata Osei-Bryson and Ojelanki Ngwenyama explore the potential of data mining technology, specifically decision tree generation, for providing support for systematic theory testing. This data mining technology is itself built on the principles of abductive inference and evaluating hypotheses based on Peirce's scientific method. They assert that this approach could assist scientists to explore alternative hypotheses for existing theories. They demonstrate their approach with empirical observations collected from twenty organizations in two countries using instruments from the user performance area of IS research, specifically task-technology fit and user satisfaction studies. The paper aims to help overcome the problem of the paucity of hypotheses for theory development in the positivist approach of Popper and others. The approach therefore aims to achieve significant savings in terms of the time and cost of conducting systematic theory testing and development. Stefan Henningsson and Sven Carlsson investigate the problem of information systems integration in the context of mergers and acquisitions. Information systems integration is critical for achieving the intended goals. The topic is eternal and timely in this current climate as financial institutions rise and fall and many of the challenges this brings are related to integrating information systems and maintaining operations. The authors have an ambitious approach as they try to combine existing research on both information systems integration and mergers and acquisitions with a multiple site case study into a model on information systems integration issues. They develop a six dimensional theoretical framework for information systems integration in corporate mergers and acquisitions. This can be used by companies since, through the combination of dimensions, it shows the information systems integration issues, decisions, and actions that a company has to address in the mergers and acquisitions process.

PurposeThe advent of web services and the semantic web have opened up opportunities for a new generation of interoperable systems on the web. The purpose of this paper is to show the importance of semantics in design and construction, and how this has long been recognised and addressed to varying extents by researchers.Design/methodology/approachThere is now the potential for designs to be developed through a system of collaborating design services and for input by the construction team members. The potential also extends to the construction phase where the designers can provide more timely responses to problems encountered in the field. Within this environment, there is the need for effective mechanisms for design and construction information management, in addition to an ontology that facilitates the sharing of design and construction information and the underlying semantics. This paper explores these trends in collaborative design and construction, and presents an ontology‐based approach to project information management in a semantic web environment.FindingsThe findings include a framework for semantic web‐based information management (SWIMS), which provides for effective collaborative information management. Examples, based on design and construction information, are presented to illustrate the key concepts.Originality/valueThis paper presents an innovative approach to overcoming the limitations of conventional information management approaches in construction. The proposed approach is expected to enhance collaboration, and avoid information loss, overload and misunderstanding,

NASA's Visualization, Exploration, and Data Analysis (VEDA) project is an open-source science cyberinfrastructure for data processing, visualization, exploration, and geographic information systems (GIS) capabilities (https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/esds/veda). VEDA was an ambitious platform and one that was only made possible in the past year by building upon existing NASA projects. The extensive technology community at NASA continues to come together to design, build and use VEDA’s interoperable APIs and datasets. This presentation will demo the current capabilities of VEDA and discuss how these capabilities were designed and architected with the central goals of science delivery, reproducible science, and interoperability to support re-use of data and APIs across NASA’s Earth Science ecosystem of tools. The presentation will close with VEDA’s future plans. In 2023, VEDA will support NASA’s Transform to Open Science (TOPS) program and open-source science initiatives through data, APIs and analytics platforms. In 2023 and beyond, VEDA will advance the state of the art in cloud-based Earth science as well as strengthening the ties of technology within NASA.The projects behind VEDA’s current features are:The Multi-Mission Algorithm and Analysis Platform (https://maap-project.org/, presented at EGU 2019): Recognizing the numerous advantages of open, reproducible science, NASA and ESA are working together to create the Joint ESA-NASA MAAP. The MAAP brings together relevant data and algorithms in a common virtual environment in order to support the global aboveground terrestrial carbon dynamics research community.  The COVID-19 Earth Observation Dashboard (https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/covid19/): Following the interest in this dashboard, NASA invested in the design and development of a new dashboard infrastructure. This infrastructure is highly configurable to support easily adding new datasets and discoveries. UI and config layers are built upon the VEDA STAC catalog and Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFFs. The Earthdata Information Systems (EIS) pilots (https://eis.smce.nasa.gov/): Scientists at NASA worked together on open science tools to develop new research projects using Earth Observation data across the domains of fire, freshwater, greenhouse gasses, and sea level rise. ArcGIS Enterprise in the Cloud (gis.earthdata.nasa.gov) provides GIS capabilities. The projects listed above have all made VEDA a reality in a year. The scientists from EIS are using the new dashboard infrastructure to tell their stories and the analytics backend from MAAP to scale their science. In 2023, VEDA plans many initiatives in the work to extend its reach within and beyond NASA. There are many advanced technologies at NASA and we see an opportunity for VEDA to support closing the information gaps across groups. For example, VEDA will support driving standards for using, publishing and visualizing NASA’s Earthdata Zarr archives and also deliver interoperable APIs for its data stores to support dynamic data visualization and storytelling.VEDA will also extend its reach beyond NASA by providing a JupyterHub for any user to explore the data behind NASA Earth Science, specifically the discoveries presented in the Earthdata Dashboard.

Effective information and knowledge management is vital in many areas, including higher education. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, especially the long short-term memory (LSTM) information system performance patterns in the educational world. This article explores the application of LSTM to optimize knowledge management in colleges, focusing on the prediction of information systems performance. The proposed methods include text classification steps, with measures such as data collection, data pre-processing, word representation, classification, and evaluation. The test results showed that the LSTM model managed to classify reviews labeled positive, neutral, and negative with an accuracy of 33.33%. However, the success of the model was limited by the size of the data set and the pre-processing involved. This research recommends further development with the addition of experimental data, proper preprocessing adjustments, and better hyperparameter identification to improve the accuracy of the prediction results. Introduction An innovative teaching and learning environment was established in 2000 in the School of Information Management and Systems at Monash University, Australia. Taking inspiration from the Bauhaus School of Design, a studio model was incorporated into a core subject in all year levels of the Bachelor of Information Management and Systems (BIMS). The studio model is a radical shift from the lecture/tutorial teaching environment typically found in a tertiary institution. It has meant the construction of a new teaching space, provision of a supporting IT infrastructure and the development of a curriculum integrated within and across all year levels. The initial cost of building, furnishing and equipping the studio was funded by a grant (Carbone et al., 1999). The ongoing cost in terms of maintenance and technical support is equivalent to a traditional teaching environment. However, the high staff-student ratio, particularly at the lecturer level, has meant that the cost of running a studio subject is approximately three times more than teaching with the traditional approach. This paper compares first year students' reactions, at mid-year and at the end of the year, in respect to four aspects of the studio model: the layout of the physical teaching space, the integrated curriculum, the IT infrastructure, and use of portfolio assessment. It also reports on students' reactions to the studio in comparison to the traditional teaching environments they experience in their other subjects. Data was obtained through survey questionnaires. Results are used to inform a discussion of the issue of appropriate teaching and learning environments for first year IT students. This paper extends the research that examined the students' reactions to the studio in semester 1 of 2001, (Carbone and Sheard 2002). Other research has compared students' reactions across the three year levels of the undergraduate BIMS degree (Carbone et al., 2002a; Carbone et al., 2002b). Background The studio model has been described in (Arnott & Atchison, 1997; Carbone et al., 2000). Excerpts from the Carbone et al. paper, (2000), that describe the four aspects of the SIMS studio and its foundational influences are included below to enable the reader to gain a full understanding of the context of the research. The BIMS Undergraduate Degree Program The Bachelor of Information Management and Systems (BIMS), at Monash University, Australia, is a three-year IT degree with a strong practical focus. It aims to prepare students for careers in information systems and information management. Central to the BIMS program is a compulsory (core) year long studio subject in each year of the course. Other core subjects include information systems, information management, systems analysis and design, project management, the Internet, and multimedia. In addition to the core subjects, students can select elective subjects from a wide range of disciplines that are usually taught in a traditional setting. The Bauhaus Influence The studio-based teaching and learning approach adopted for use in the BIMS program is based on the Bauhaus School of Design's model for teaching and learning. The Bauhaus, developed in Germany in the early 1900s, was an innovative art school whose basic ideologies started a move towards the better integration of art and technology for the mutual benefit of both (Flores, 2000). The Bauhaus set out to create a consulting art center for industry and the trades (Bayer, 1975). The influences of the Bauhaus are widespread and varied, and the educational concepts upon which the Bauhaus philosophy was based appealed to the BIMS teaching and learning development team. The Bauhaus school had three aims: the first was to rescue all of the arts from the isolation in which each then found itself (Whitford, 1992) in order to encourage the individual artisans and craftsmen to work cooperatively and combine all of their skills. …
