Developing candy from silkworm protein for bridging waste management and sustainable development

The paper reviews the main indicators for decision-making process in the field of waste management at the local level. Development of sustainable integrated waste management system requires comprehensive consideration and assessment of many factors. Nevertheless, a small number of indicators are usually used for assessing the development scenarios of the waste management system. The purpose of the study is to identify the most important aspects of the waste management system and to formulate general principles for ensuring the sustainability of solid waste management systems performance and development at the regional level. Analysis of previous studies shows the variety of approaches to classify indicators of sustainable development in the field of solid waste management. Large number of factors, a small number of observations and unknown dynamic relationships between variables are shown to be reasons for complex problems in solid waste management decision-making. An expert assessment was made to investigate the officials’ and practitioners’ vision on waste management systems performance and strategies development. The set of economic, social, environmental, and technical indicators was selected and assessed by the group of experts. The analysis shows that mainly economic indicators are considered by local authorities and other stakeholders involved in regional waste management strategies development and implementation while social and environmental aspects are out of sight. At the same time financing of waste management system is not systematic and consistent and the amount of funding is extremely insufficient. The main principles for sustainable performance and development of the waste management system were formulated in the paper as the following: principle of national development strategies integration, principle of application of an effective monitoring and forecasting system, principle of differentiation of the development strategies at the regional level, principle of considering the stakeholders’ interests.

Urban management in any context has a different economic, social and political structure, which is in harmony with the existing models of organization. In spite of these differences, in order to reach a sustainable urban development, several different conferences should be referred to. In the “Brundtland Commission 1987” about urban sustainable development these definitions have been given: “preservation and promotion of the quality level of city life. This consists of ecology, culture, politics, economies, and social participation. However, this development should in no case weigh on and create any problems for the future generations”. In all the definitions of urban management and urban sustainable development and in any political context citizens’ participation in decision making and insistence on social justice are mentioned. The aim of this article is a descriptive, analytic, and comparative study of different models of popular participation in different developed countries. Each of these countries has different social and political structure. However they all have the same aim which is the citizens’ empowerment. To reach the ideal urban management model it is necessary to have a clear image of the place and participation of citizens in order to create a socially, economically and politically sustainable developed society.

The article is aimed at substantiating sustainable development as an objective reason for the implementation of environmental policy and an object of managerial influence. The article states that the economic development of Ukraine, without taking into account the principles of placement of productive forces, which are guided by the needs and conditions of social development to ensure its sustainability, has led to the crisis ecological state of our country. This requires building a process of interaction in the «nature – society» system, taking into account the conception of sustainable development, which should be implemented in environmental policy. In the authors’ interpretation of the concept of «environmental policy», the emphasis is placed on the process, systemic, strategic, functional, managerial, instrumental aspects of ensuring the environmental development of the State and on the principles of response and prevention. It is substantiated that in the context of ensuring sustainable development, the role of the regional and local levels of management of its environmental component through managerial activities is increasing. On a specific example, a conclusion is made about the imperfection of the solid waste management system in Ukraine and proposals for its improvement are formed, covering all subsystems of environmental regulation. The shortcomings of the managerial activity of the subject composition, which complement the systemic problems of modern environmental policy, are allocated. Sustainable local development is presented as a set of goal-oriented, synchronous, step-by-step actions that differ from each other in direction, subject and object composition, as well as as integrity that includes the environmental component among others. The Ukrainian State, adhering to world civilizational standards, must provide such conditions for social development in order to ensure its sustainability. One of these conditions is the construction of the process of interaction in the system «nature – man (society)» based on the conception of sustainable development, which, in turn, should be implemented in environmental policy. Decentralization processes, expansion of the range of powers of regional and local authorities, local self-government bodies strengthen the role of regional and local levels of government in ensuring sustainable development. The imperfection of the solid waste management system in Ukraine, verified by a specific example, made it possible to form proposals for improving this system with coverage of all subsystems of environmental regulation. Environmental policy, through which environmental development is ensured, is implemented through the managerial activity of its subjects, and the shortcomings inherent in this activity must be eliminated. Under such conditions, sustainable local development will become a system that is represented by a set of goal-oriented, synchronous, step-by-step actions that differ from each other in direction, subject and object composition, as well as integrity, where the environmental component is of importance.

In conclusion, a better level of solid waste management will be reflected in a better level of sustainable development in the municipality under study.

Various approaches have been developed to achieve sustainability in forestry, under changing social needs and, consequently, changing definitions of sustainability. This has led to the confusing situation in which various groups have different understandings of the meaning of ‘sustainability’. Likewise, the concepts utilized to achieve sustainability, often with a poorly defined objective, are sometimes not clear and/or inconsistent as a systematic overview regarding definitions and concepts is lacking. Based on a literature review, this paper discusses related terms such as sustainability, sustained yield management, sustainable forestry, sustainable forest management and sustainable development: their history, concepts and relationships, from a European perspective. Finally, flexibility is proposed as a solution to overcome the identified shortcomings at all scales, while focussing on the enterprise level. The origin of the sustainability concept in forestry was first driven by forest experts, while participatory elements have been considered since the more recent idea of sustainable development. Since then, much effort has been made to achieve intragenerational fairness by creating an improved participatory process. Concurrently, the original idea of sustainable forestry as long-term and future-oriented management, considering future generations’ needs fell behind. An increasing standing timber volume in Europe and the discussion on climate change brought new interest in how to cope with risks in the context of pervasive future uncertainties within the scope of promoting sustainable development. Although the consideration of risk has been concentrated on as a topic in forest science in recent years, studies have mainly focused on the enhancement of forest resistance against disturbances. However, precaution and risk avoidance alone are probably insufficient to achieve an improved sustainable development that focuses on intergenerational fairness, as these more defensive approaches may disregard important management opportunities involved with an uncertain future. A perhaps more promising approach, the idea of future options and the ability to respond to changing social and biophysical circumstances (i.e. flexibility) as criteria for sustainable development have only shown a shadowy existence up to now. To further develop the consistency of sustainability concepts, a shift of sustainability approaches from continuity towards flexibility options is proposed.

Achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 remains a significant challenge, with 30% of targets showing no progress, regression, or severe deviations. Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) is a valuable method for monitoring and accelerating progress toward sustainable development by evaluating systems, processes, or products from environmental, economic, and societal perspectives. This work provides insights for integrating SDGs into LCT and advancing sustainability science. The study utilized bibliometric analysis of 21,783 publications from 2013 to 2022 to map LCT research to SDGs. It introduces a novel framework for integrating the SDGs into LCT studies, allowing for comprehensive assessments across environmental, societal, and economic dimensions. Thematic analysis identified five main areas of focus: waste management, infrastructure, agriculture, energy transitions, and integrated approaches to sustainable development. The highest emphasis was on SDGs 7 (Affordable Energy), 8 (Decent Work), 9 (Industry and Innovation), 12 (Responsible Consumption), and 13 (Climate Action). The study identified key institutions, journals, and countries contributing significantly to achieving SDGs through LCA and discussed future research topics with potential for shaping strategies towards a sustainable future. This research highlights innovation and evidence-based solutions in critical areas such as clean energy, sustainable urban development, and environmental conservation towards addressing SDGs. The prominence analysis revealed 23 topical clusters, with significant contributions in energy, construction, and pollution control aligning with multiple SDGs. However, the need for collaborative research and policy-making is evident in clusters like corporate social responsibility, supply chains, and air quality, which currently have fewer mappings to SDGs.

Taiwan has implemented waste management and recycling education in schools since the 1980s and been recognized with her higher recycling rate than many developed nations worldwide, as reported by the Wall Street Journal in 2016. This chapter reviews the projects and policies of Environmental Education to investigate their impact on school waste management and recycling education in Taiwan. These influential projects include the Green School Partnership Network Project, Sustainable Campus Project, Environmental Protection School Award, and the National Environmental Education Award. Important policies are the Grades 1–9 National Curriculum Framework, Environmental Education Act and Grades 1–12 National Curriculum Framework. The chapter indicates that the development of waste management and recycling education in Taiwan consists of different stages: schoolyard cleaning activities; garbage classification and recycling; environmental management of school, curriculum and teaching; and practical practices in daily lives. The chapter concludes a set of waste management and recycling education elements: being relevant to daily life and achievable goals; following the global trend of environmental education; applying a systematic operation and a whole school approach; infusing waste management and recycling into the school curriculum and over-all learning; and considering responsibility and sustainable development. The chapter also proposes with a strategy for waste management and recycling education in schools: offering incentives, such as reducing costs of waste disposal, encouraging learning through activities, building networks to share and promote recycling education, infusing waste management and recycling into the school curriculum, awarding for systemic operation, and applying the whole school approach to recycling education.
