Preface

The 2021 6th International Symposium on Energy Science and Chemical Engineering (ISESCE 2021) was held on January 22-24, 2021 as a virtual conference due to the growing concerns over the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19), and in order to protect the well-being of our attendees, partners, and staff as our number one priority. ISESCE 2021 is to bring together innovative academics and industrial experts in the field of energy science and chemical engineering to a common forum. The primary goal of the conference is to promote research and developmental activities in energy science and chemical engineering and another goal is to promote scientific information interchange between researchers, developers, engineers, students, and practitioners working all around the world. The conference will be held every year to make it an ideal platform for people to share views and experiences in energy science and chemical engineering and related areas.This scientific event brings together more than 90 national and international researchers in energy science and chemical engineering. On top of the local participants coming from different national universities, international participants are also registered from different countries, namely Australia, Brazil, South Africa and Ireland. During the conference, the conference model was divided into three sessions, including oral presentations, keynote speeches, and online Q&A discussion. In the first part, some scholars, whose submissions were selected as the excellent papers, were given about 5-10 minutes to perform their oral presentations one by one. Currently the entire world is struggling against the virulent pandemic COVID-19. Unfortunately, each of us is affected, either directly or indirectly. Our conference, 2020 International Conference on Industrial Applications of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (BDAI 2020) was not an exception.In November, mass gatherings are not permitted by the government in China to protect people. It is uncertain when the COVID-19 will end, so it remains unclear for postponement time, while many scholars and researchers wanted to attend this long-waited conference and have academic exchanges with their peers. Therefore, in order to actively respond the call of the government, and meet author’s request, the BDAI 2020, which was planned to be held in Shenzhen, China from November 26 to 29, 2020, was changed to be held on November 26, 2020 online through Tencent VooV software. This approach not only avoids people gathering, but also meets their communication needs.Each keynote speech lasted 40 minutes, invited speech 30 minutes and authors presentation 15 minutes. Each presentation was included with questions and answers. There was lively discussion at the conference, which promotes the academic exchange. The success and prosperity of the conference is reflected high level of the papers received. BDAI 2020 became an effective communication platform for all the participants over the world.BDAI 2020 was organized by Hong Kong Society of Mechanical Engineers. This conference aims to provide a platform for researchers and engineers to share their ideas, recent developments, and successful practices in Industrial Applications of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence. More than 40 participants attended the conference, they were from USA, Australia, UK, Malaysia, South Korea, India, Swiss, China and more. Four renowned speakers given speeches about their latest research and reports. They are: Prof. Dan Zhang, York University, Canada; Prof. DP Sharma, AMUIT under UNDP & Academic Ambassador, Cloud Computing (AI), IBM, USA; Prof. Amir H. The conference also had 1 technical session and 1 poster sessions.The conference proceeding is a compilation of the accepted papers and represent an interesting outcome of the conference. This book covers 2 chapters: 1. Big Data and AI Technologies; 2. Big Data and AI Applications.We would like to acknowledge all of those who supported BDAI 2020. 2021 International Conference on New Energy Research and Applications (ICNERA 2021) was held in Sanya, China during July 8-10, 2021. Due to the COVID-19 and travel restrictions, the conference was held in a hybrid format, including both on-site and cloud meetings, which was organized by Hong Kong Society of Mechanical Engineers.This conference aims to provide a platform for researchers and engineers to share their ideas, recent developments, and successful practices in energy engineering. The participants of the conference were from almost every part of the world, with various background such as academia, industry, and well-known entrepreneurs. More than 30 participants attended the conference online and offline, they were from China, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Malaysia, Japan, UK and more. Preface6th annual 2018 International Conference on Material Science and Environmental Engineering [MSEE 2018] was held on November 23rd-25th, 2018, Chongqing, China. MSEE2018 aims to bring researchers, engineers, and students to the areas of Material Science and Environmental Engineering. MSEE2018 features unique mixed topics of Material Science and Advanced Materials, Material Engineering and Application, Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development, Renewable Energy and Building Energy Saving, Environmental Science and Engineering.We received over 275 submissions from various parts of the world. The Technical Program Committee worked very hard to have all manuscripts reviewed before the review deadline. All the accepted papers have been submitted to strict peer-review by 2-4 referees, and selected based on originality, significance and clarity for the purpose of the conference. The conference program is extremely rich, profound and featuring high-impact presentations of selected papers and additional late-breaking contributions. Peer review is crucial for academic research, when checking manuscripts for publishing, considering proposals for research funding, and deciding which submitted contributions to include in conference programmes. Peer reviewers are tasked with assessing readability, scientific merit, accuracy, reliability, novelty, relevance, completeness and focus. Conscientious, experienced peer reviewers add considerable value to scientific manuscripts by working with authors, especially Early Career Researchers (ECRs), to help them achieve the required standards set by editors and publishers. Given the centrality of peer review to academia, it is easy to forget that peer review is often voluntary and unpaid, requiring considerable time and resources. Without peer reviewers, editors and publishers, and conference organisers, many of whom are also voluntary and unpaid, would be tasked with reviewing submissions. This would require considerable time and diverse knowledge and skills, even when the scope of topics for submissions is narrow. The recent substantial rise in the number of journal article retractions, affecting both large and small publishers, raises questions about why the traditional checks and balances put in place by the publishers, especially peer review, do not uncover the problems. This paper will explore both the merits of effective peer review and root causes of problems currently being experienced, with consideration of how peer review could be improved to serve future requirements.

The 8th Annual International Conference on Material Science and Engineering (ICMSE 2020) was successfully held in Guiyang, Guizhou, China, from August 14 to August 15, 2020. The ICMSE2020 is becoming one of the leading international conferences for presenting novel and fundamental advances in the fields of material science and engineering in China. We believe that through keynote speeches by outstanding, internationally recognized scholars, in oral sessions and posters presentations, the Conference has reflected an overview of the latest developments in materials science. Writing an editorial note for the first volume of the new journal of Archives of Advanced Engineering Science (AAES) is a great glory and honor for me. The scope of AAES is not limited to a single aspect of engineering and science and covers various subfields in the applied and fundamental engineering sciences. Particularly, articles with interdisciplinary nature are welcomed. A warm welcome to the inaugural issue of AAES, which is a new exciting title and subject for Bon View Press portfolio journals for 2023. AAES is a new beginning for engineering development in the way to advanced engineering science. I am fortunate and honored to be a member of AAES and take the responsibility of Editor-in-Chief. As can be witnessed in journal title, this pioneering journal aims to address and understand Engineering Science. Subject fields include, but are not limited to, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Informatics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Engineering, Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Renewable Energy and Resources, Technology and Applications, Sustainable Development and Interdisciplinary science. Today, we feel great happiness to publish the first issue of our journal in November 2023. This issue has six articles on different interesting topics in engineering science. I believe that AAES is providing a vigorously open-access, peer-reviewed, leading platform aiming at publishing the most valuable and Influential research works in the main basic areas of engineering science around the world. To enhance the standard of the journal through publishing high quality papers, we followed the main practices of Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and accordingly handled research and publication misconduct. Strict ethical guidelines for editors, authors, and peer reviewers were clearly presented. We introduced desk reject, double-blind peer-review by at least two anonymous reviewers and plagiarism detection to guarantee high standards of AAES.

Tandem and Hybrid Processes for Carbon Dioxide Utilization

Through journal peer review, reviewers play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and integrity of published research. Most of the literature focuses on the challenges facing peer review, while limited research has been conducted on the engagement of academics with peer review and little to none has focused on the engagement of doctoral students. Considering that doctoral studies are pivotal in the training of independent researchers and peer review is a fundamental pillar of academic research, this study, guided by socialization theory, explored the socialization experiences of doctoral students as they engage in or refrain from engaging in peer review activities. To this end, we conducted 51 semi-structured interviews with STEM doctoral students from 11 research-intensive universities in China to investigate whether and how they engage in peer review. The analysis showed that most doctoral students engage in peer review by assisting their supervisors in the peer review process under supervisory mentoring, a process we termed “auxiliary reviewing.” Their participation in auxiliary reviewing is not recognized (by journals), with some students wishing it to be acknowledged and others not showing concern about it; students’ attitudes depend on their views on work valorization. Most students underline the importance of mentoring for reviewing and the key role of supervisors in teaching and guiding them to do high-quality peer reviewing. Some students had been invited directly by journals to act as reviewers, but these students also stressed the role of prior mentor-reviewing experiences in building confidence to undergo the transition to become independent referees. The findings have implications for doctoral education and for the sustainability of peer review.

Previous ICESCE conferences were held in Shenzhen, Kunming, Haikou (China), Shenzhen from 2015-2019. In light of the worldwide spread of COVID-19, the conference organizing committee has decided to postpone the 6th edition conference to July 17-19, 2020 in Dali, China for the safety and health of all the participants. The primary goal of the conference is to promote research and developmental activities in energy science and chemical engineering and another goal is to promote scientific information interchange between researchers, developers, engineers, students, and practitioners working all around the world.The meeting focused on the latest research fields of “Energy Science” and “Chemical Engineering”. It consists of two parts: speeches of keynote speakers and oral presentations. More than 100 participants attended the meeting, they were from China, Bulgarian, Canada, India, South Africa, Italy, Ireland and more. In the first part, we invited two professors as our keynote speakers. Prof. Lei Xing, Institute of Green Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Jiangsu University, China as well as our conference chair. He performed a speech on Functionally graded electrodes and segmented design toward the commercialization of PEM (proton exchange membrane) fuel cells. His research on PEM fuel cells improved cell performance. Assoc. Prof. Md. Hasanuzzaman, Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE), University of Malaya, Malaysia. He talked about Global Challenges in the Energy Sector: Prospects of Solar Thermal Energy. He appealed to make full use of the solar thermal energy to slow down the global warming and climate change. Their insightful speeches had triggered heated discussion in the second session of the conference. See related article, pp 691–696 The golden standard for prehypertension and hypertension in childhood is based on sex-, age-, and height-specific 90th (or ≥120/80 mm Hg) and 95th percentiles of blood pressure (BP), respectively.1 This reflects the current setting that hypertension definitions in childhood are driven by statistical methods, not by outcome variables. Unfortunately, this golden standard results in 476 sex-, age-, and height-specific cutoffs to assess the 95th percentile of systolic or diastolic BP in children between 1 and 17 years. Consequently, this multivariate approach results in a complex and cumbersome decision process up to the level that diagnoses are commonly not made or result in inaccurate qualification.2 To further illustrate this, the diagnosis of (pre)hypertension was only mentioned in 26% of 507 (pre)hypertension children or adolescents in the medical file in the Hansen study.2 Specific characteristics like the age, height, obesity-related diagnoses, and the magnitude and number of abnormal BP readings improved the odds that the diagnosis was mentioned in the electronic medical file.2 Because of this and similar observations, it is reasonable to search for strategies to improve correct diagnosis and recognition. The development of easier tools to diagnose (pre)-hypertension by simplified thresholds is one of these strategies. In this issue of the journal, Xi et al3 reported on a prediction analysis of adult hypertension and subclinical cardiovascular outcomes (carotid intima–media thickness, pulse wave velocity, left ventricular mass, at the age of 26–48 years) from the Bogalusa Heart Study and, hereby, compared the golden standard percentile approach to a simplified approach. This special section of ChemElectroChem includes some invited or contributed papers presented at the annual meeting (GEI 2013) of the Electrochemistry Division of the Italian Society of Chemistry (SCI), which was held in Pavia from 22 to 26 September 2013.1 1 Before giving more details on the contributions, let us spend some words on GEI 2013. The conference was organized around 14 oral sessions and 2 poster sessions. The oral sessions covered five topics: “Electrochemistry and Energy”, “Electrochemical Methods”, “Models and Processes”, “Electrochemistry and Sensors”, “Electrocatalysis”, “Electrochemistry and Environment”. A specific session was also devoted to the delivery of the divisional awards to young researchers. The most relevant scientific appointments of the meeting were indeed the two plenary lectures given by Bruno Scrosati (University of Ulm and Italian Institute of Technology, Rome) who delivered a talk entitled Challenges in the Li/Air batteries, and by Daniel Mandler (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem) who spoke about Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Two Dimensions: From Langmuir–Blodgett Films to Monolayers and Polymeric Films. Besides the plenary lectures, there were five keynotes, 59 oral communications, and 43 poster communications. The conference was attended by more than 100 scientists, most of them young researchers, post-docs and Ph.D. students, which testifies to the vitality and freshness of Italian Electrochemistry. A large part of the conference was devoted to energy, including applications in batteries, fuel cells (polymeric and solid oxide), and solar cells (chiefly dye-sensitized solar cells). A specific session on energy was organized in cooperation with the newly-appointed SCI inter-divisional group on Chemistry for Renewable Energy (EnerCHEM). GEI meetings are interdisciplinary events bringing together electrochemists from different scientific/technological areas, including physical and analytical chemists, materials scientists, chemical and environmental engineers. The papers reported in this special section of ChemElectroChem indeed reflect this cultural and scientific richness. Contributions span from basic works, including characterization of electron transfer in nanocrystals, and electrocatalysis mechanisms in metal nanoparticles, to more applied papers on materials for lithium/air batteries and DSSCs, as well as on catalysts for both PEMFCs and SOFCs. One paper is concerned with CO2 capture by means of an ionic liquid-based system. The durability of an electrocatalyst for DEFC and the photoelectrochemical response of a DSSC are the topics of two more applied contributions. We thank ChemPubSoc Europe and Wiley-VCH for allowing us to present this work to the wide and qualified audience of ChemElectroChem, and we hope that our efforts can contribute to the improvement of scientific debate, chiefly on energy-related topics, as well as to the strengthening the Italian Electrochemistry reputation at the international level.[1] Piercarlo Mustarelli President of the GEI 2013 Organizing Committee

Welcome to IPSN 2012, the Eleventh ACM/IEEE Conference on Information Processing in Sensing Networks! This year marks the first time IPSN is held in Asia, recognizing the region's growing interest and activities in the areas of sensor networks, Internet-of-Things (IoT), and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). We hope that you will enjoy this diverse conference that is a leading venue for publications and idea exchange on sensor networks. IPSN is unique in its broad coverage of the field, ranging from foundations to system implementation and platforms. It is a meeting point of theory and practice, as embodied in its two tracks: Information Processing (IP) and Sensor Platforms, Tools and Design Methods (SPOTS). In an effort to further unify the conference this year, we formed a joint technical program committee (TPC) and held a single TPC meeting. Authors could select the IP or the SPOTS track for their submissions and TPC members were able to provide their review preferences across all papers submitted to the conference. We believe that in this way, each paper received the most relevant and useful set of reviews. The field of sensor networks has shown a continuing strength over the years as indicated by the number and the quality of submissions this year: 53 in the SPOTS track and 94 in the IP track, for a total of 147 submissions. These submissions underwent a two-stage review process during which each paper received at least three reviews and occasionally up to seven reviews. An online discussion followed the review process during which the set of papers that were discussed in the TPC meeting were selected. The set of accepted papers were decided during a face-to-face TPC meeting. 22 papers were selected for publication out of which 12 were in the IP track and 10 in the SPOTS track. As in the past, the exciting demo and poster session provides an opportunity for attendees to examine and discuss the latest in sensing devices, systems and applications, following a special session with a rapid-fire series of short "pitch" talks from the authors of posters and demos. A new addition to the program this year is the PhD Forum where students working in the field present their dissertation ideas and get critical feedback from a panel of experts. The main conference is complemented by a number of workshops and tutorials in emerging or adjacent areas of sensor networks such as mobile, IoT, and smart objects.
