Currently, there remains a shortage of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields despite recent efforts to increase numbers. The Department of Commerce is predicting that STEM job openings will grow 17% by 2018, which is a much faster rate than most other careers. These are among the highest-paying fields, in part because of the rising demand. Educational institutions in the United States will have to address this issue in order to compete economic leadership globally. High schools, community colleges, and four year institutions must increase awareness and efforts to recruit and retain more women in STEM majors. The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of female transfer engineering students at Midwestern University. Participants were asked what were their experiences as female engineering students at both the community college and the four-year institution? They were also asked to share about the community college transfer process, student involvement, relationship with faculty and advisors, sense of belonging, interaction with Faculty and staff/mentorship, peer interactions, and academic performance. Qualitative methods were used provide in-depth information regarding each student’s negative and positive experiences at both the community college and Midwestern University as a female transfer engineering student to provide a better understanding the different experiences of being an female engineering student at Midwestern University after transferring from a community college. Engineering is a specially designed course that includes the application of knowledge explicitly in the field of science and natural phenomena. The fields of engineering, technology, and physical sciences have been growing towards a new era of development and innovation across the globe. They include many fields, and one such significant area is mechanical engineering, which deals with the construction, working principles, and applications of various types of machines. Technical data of the products based on their scientific principles, along with parameters, are involved in the development of mechanical engineering. With this background, this study is designed to look forward to the future directions and emerging technologies in mechanical engineering. This review study investigated the future direction and emerging technology in mechanical engineering. It also highlighted the purpose and significance of mechanical engineering and discussed some of the research questions in mechanical engineering. Future directions of learning and technology, mechanical invention and development, the transportation industry, electric vehicles, and the artificial intelligence industrial revolution are also mentioned in this study. Mechanical engineering is a growing field of technology across the world. This review study indicated that it is essential to have upgraded knowledge and skills in the field of engineering and technology in this modern era. Many theories can be applied in the mechanical field with the support of upgrades in technology. The direction of mechanical engineering study is to learn the mechanical aspects of different technologies and the knowledge about that technology to optimize its use.

This chapter applauds the growing move toward social science collaboration with colleagues in other fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Drawing on several decades of experience in working with biophysical scientists and engineers, as well as on prior literature, I offer three main observations. First, STEM colleagues will often expect social scientists to play the role of public relations specialists, helping to “educate” the public, or to convince people that our STEM colleagues already have the right answers. Second, part of our job is a different kind of “science education” – educating STEM colleagues about basic principles of democratic governance. Third, we have an opportunity and an obligation to ask not just what social science can contribute to STEM, but also, what working with STEM colleagues can contribute to the social sciences. There appear to be particularly important opportunities for gaining insights into some of the less visible or obvious dynamics of power and privilege.

Introduction: The aim of this study is to review the process of teaching coding to a student with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and to examine that student’s educational gains, problems encountered during process, and suggestions for solutions.Method: The research was designed as a case study and involved a three-month instruction process, during which the instruction sessions were prepared via the explicit instruction method of coding skills for a 10-year-old boy with autism spectrum disorder. Further, the contributions of this study were analysed through the data obtained via content analysis method with the NVivo 10 program.Findings: The findings indicated that the participant demonstrated significant gains as a result of the coding teaching process. He successfully completed the first and second levels in the Code.org platform by reducing the level of help given under the researcher’s supervision. The participant completed the last two lessons of his second level without any help and became independent in coding skills. The gains increased the participant’s motivation; he further stated that he wanted to make coding his future profession.Discussion: The participant not only gained skills in programming, he also learned new skills, e.g., finding the document he saved on a computer, taking a screenshot, and printing something out. According to the literature, programming teaching not only contributes to career planning in the field of engineering, these skills can also be used in daily life or will be needed in other professions. It has been emphasized that individuals with ASD should not only use technology as consumers, but also should be productive individuals in the field of technology by developing their computational thinking skills.

The authors of National Science Education Standards consider equitable science education prerequisite to a scientifically literate society (National Research Council, 1996). Issues of equity and teaching, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are inherent in discussions about science education reform (National Research Council, 1996; Rutherford & Ahlgren, 1990). Refocusing the goals of K-12 science education increases the need for science teachers to acquire more equitable teaching strategies. Gender studies in science education have focused on the sociocultural variables affecting students' subject choices (Eccles, 1989), intervention programs (Kahle & Meece, 1994), exemplary science teachers (Tobin & Fraser, 1987, 1990), teachers' public gender role (Tobin, Kahle, & Fraser, 1990), and students' views about science (Kahle & Meece, 1994). Recent reports on gender indicate that the Sputnik-era analysis of teaching may be inadequate for problems undermining adolescent girls' education (Eder, Evans, & Parker, 1995; Greenberg-Lake, 1994; Harris & Associates, 1993; Orenstein, 1994; Pipher, 1994; Schultz, 1991; Wellesley Center for Research on Women, 1992). For over two decades, researchers have studied the masculine image of science and its effect on recruitment and retention of women and girls into science, engineering, and technology fields. Keller (1992) argues that the image of science cannot change without challenging traditional concepts of masculinity and femininity. An explanation for science teaching's failure to reach girls is that many preservice science teacher education programs do not address the interwoven concepts of gender and science and how students' and teachers' different understandings of gender and science may affect their attitudes, beliefs, classroom behaviors, and expectations. Teachers' unconscious acceptance of gender-role stereotypes in science may influence their behaviors and teaching practices. Girls may receive fewer opportunities than boys to answer questions, use science equipment, and participate in science activities. Teachers may perceive boys' work to be more important than girls' work (Kahle & Meece, 1994). Teacher behaviors and practices reinforce the concept that science is a subject in which boys participate successfully more often than girls do. Kennedy (1990) suggests that successful inservice programs addressing changes in teachers' classroom practices should force them to question their experiences and to question the beliefs that are based on those experiences. Teacher education faculty may teach equity in education, but when one considers who takes and teaches science at tertiary-level institutions, universities are poor examples of equity in educational settings (Crozier & Menter, 1993; Scantlebury, 1994). Gender blindness does not begin when teachers enter their own classrooms. Martin (1991) challenges science educators to take responsibility for incorporating discussions about gender equity into science education. Many teachers are gender blind, believing that the equity issues in science teaching are resolved. Prospective teachers must consider how subtle and pervasive attitudes toward gender blindness may affect their classroom practices. Teacher education students have strong ideas about teachers and teaching from years of observation (Dunkin, Precians, & Nettle, 1994; Feiman-Nemser & Buchmann, 1987). Although Dunkin et al. (1994) imply that formal teacher education programs can influence preservice teachers' concepts about teaching, Feiman-Nemser and Buchmann (1987) argue that it is difficult for student teachers to critique what occurs in classrooms when they teach or in the classrooms of the teachers they observe. Preservice teachers often hold strong traditional attitudes toward gender-role stereotypes (Scantlebury, 1990). In this study, we explored the experience of Asian international doctoral students in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields at one research-extensive university. We found that Asian international doctoral students in the STEM fields at this institution were often isolated from their peers and faculty, faced an array of issues including the lack of funding, the choice of advisor, and other departmental issues distinct to their international student status. Implications for policy and practice are included.

The history of diversity in computing is briefly summarized and the need for a conference for Research on Equity and Sustained Participation in Engineering, Computing, and Technology (RESPECT), is briefly discussed. Since its inception in 2015, RESPECT has provided a peer-reviewed venue for presenting innovative research, experiences, and ideas on broadening participation of underrepresented groups in computing. The RESPECT 2019 research track includes papers, posters, and lightning talk presentations that examine barriers to equity and inclusion that impact the representation of women, people of color, and people with disabilities across the entire CS education and workforce pipeline; that propose and evaluate interventions to promote inclusive pedagogy in computer science classrooms, including through K-12 teacher preparation; and that describe approaches to making equity and inclusion a first principle for CS education strategies at the school and state levels.

Background The growing importance of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, accompanied by the rapid advancement of computer science (CS), has positioned these domains as cornerstones of modern education and the global workforce. That there is underrepresentation of students of colour in these fields, particularly Black and Latinx males, is well-documented, often resulting from deeply rooted systemic and institutional challenges influenced by historical inequities, structural racism, and institutional practices. This underscores a need for better understanding of the development of STEM/CS identities and career interests among these students, in order to overcome barriers and foster their inclusion in twenty-first-century career pathways. Purpose This study aimed to explore the experiences of Black and Latinx male students in one all-male Exploring Computer Science (ECS) class in the United States of America (USA). The goal was to understand how these students begin to develop their STEM/CS identities and career aspirations within the classroom context. Method The research used a qualitative research methodology involving semi-structured interviews with 12 students enrolled in the ECS course. It focused on identifying the pedagogical, familial, and contextual factors that shape students’ identity formation and career interests in STEM and CS. Findings Analysis of the students’ narratives highlighted the importance of culturally relevant pedagogy, teacher support, peer collaboration, and industry role models in fostering STEM/CS identity development. Student autonomy and exposure to relatable guest speakers were also influential in shaping their perceptions and aspirations within these fields. Conclusions Early exposure to STEM/CS through supportive and affirming educational environments can play a critical role in shaping STEM/CS identities and career interests among Black and Latinx students. Implications for educators and policymakers include promoting inclusive pedagogy, early exposure, and meaningful mentorship to support the development of diverse talent in STEM/CS fields.
