Exploring interoperability assessment for Future Internet Architectures roll out

The efforts to replace the successful, albeit aging, transmission control protocol—internet protocol (TCP/IP) Internet architecture with a better suited one have driving research interest to information-centric alternatives. The named-data networking (NDN) architecture is probably one of the main contenders to become the network layer of the future Internet thanks to its inbuilt support for mobility, in-network caching, security and, in general, for being better adapted to the needs of current network applications. At the same time, massive satellite constellations are currently being deployed in low-Earth orbits (LEO) to provide a backend for network connectivity. It is expected that, very soon, these constellations will function as proper networks thanks to intersatellite communication links. These new satellite networks will be able to benefit from their greenfield status and the new network architectures. In this article, we analyze how to deploy the network caches of an NDN-based LEO satellite network. In particular, we show how we can jointly select the most appropriate caching nodes for each piece of content and how to forward data across the constellation in two simple alternative ways. Performance results show that the caching and forwarding strategies proposed reduce path lengths up to a third with just a few caching nodes while, simultaneously, helping to spread the load along the network.

The demand for real-time data in a modern battlefield is increasing exponentially. As a result, current military network paradigms and architectures are struggling to cope with increasing capacity demands at the tactical edge. Unfortunately, rescaling existing network architectures will not be a permanent solution to the problem. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a 3- tiered Software Defined Networking (SDN) architecture consisting of heterogeneous Dense Networks (DenseNets), which is a highly condensed deployment of relatively small, lowpowered femtocells, at the tactical edge. The proposed 3-tiered SDN architecture abstracts the Land Tactical Network (LTN) as the Physical Layer, the Battlefield Tactical Network (BTN) as the Control Layer, and the Joint Task Force Headquarters (JTFHQ) as the Management Layer. The simulation and results confirm the architecture’s capability for providing interoperability between heterogeneous communications equipment and supporting high capacity demands within limited and unreliable networking infrastructure in battlefield environments.

Disasters are uncertain occasions that can impose a drastic impact on human life and building infrastructures. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays a vital role in coping with such situations by enabling and integrating multiple technological resources to develop Disaster Management Systems (DMSs). In this context, a majority of the existing DMSs use networking architectures based upon the Internet Protocol (IP) focusing on location-dependent communications. However, IP-based communications face the limitations of inefficient bandwidth utilization, high processing, data security, and excessive memory intake. To address these issues, Named Data Networking (NDN) has emerged as a promising communication paradigm, which is based on the Information-Centric Networking (ICN) architecture. An NDN is among the self-organizing communication networks that reduces the complexity of networking systems in addition to provide content security. Given this, many NDN-based DMSs have been proposed. The problem with the existing NDN-based DMS is that they use a PULL-based mechanism that ultimately results in higher delay and more energy consumption. In order to cater for time-critical scenarios, emergence-driven network engineering communication and computation models are required. In this paper, a novel DMS is proposed, i.e., Named Data Networking Disaster Management (NDN-DM), where a producer forwards a fire alert message to neighbouring consumers. This makes the nodes converge according to the disaster situation in a more efficient and secure way. Furthermore, we consider a fire scenario in a university campus and mobile nodes in the campus collaborate with each other to manage the fire situation. The proposed framework has been mathematically modeled and formally proved using timed automata-based transition systems and a real-time model checker, respectively. Additionally, the evaluation of the proposed NDM-DM has been performed using NS2. The results prove that the proposed scheme has reduced the end-to-end delay up from 2 % to 10 % and minimized up to 20 % energy consumption, as energy improved from 3 % to 20 % compared with a state-of-the-art NDN-based DMS.

This paper presents strategies for integrating heterogeneous Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) at two merged banking systems. The IP-based networking and telecommunication technology is proposed with a special emphasis on its impact on the ATM architecture at a typical commercial bank. Problems associated with current Systems Network Architecture (SNA) networks in the bank selected as the target of this study and the proposed new networking architecture are presented. The advantages and disadvantages of IP-enabled ATMs are also discussed, along with some preventive measures.

The smart grid is equipped with bi-directional information flow between its devices, aiming at automation, improved stability, resilience, and robust security. However, enabling effective and reliable communication in a smart grid is a challenging task. The majority of the proposed networking architectures fall short in addressing the key aspects of smart grid communication, including device heterogeneity, protocols and standards interoperability, and particularly application qualityof-service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, we propose iCAAP, an information-centric, QoSaware network architecture that aims to satisfy the low latency, high bandwidth, and high reliability requirements of smart grid communications. In iCAAP, we categorize smart grid traffic (emanating from diverse applications) into three priority classes to enable preferential treatment of traffic flows. Our simulation results demonstrate the higher scalability of iCAAP in satisfying the stringent requirements of high priority traffic compared to the state-of-the-art.

The emergence of new applications puts forward more stringent requirements on the performance of wireless communication networks, therefore novel architecture is required to satisfy the development demands. Among the research of 6G wireless networking architecture, the cell-free network is considered as one of the most potential enabler technologies. However, the current network is generally based on rigid architecture (i.e. centralized or distributed) and cannot be flexibly adapted to different applications. This paper first investigates a 6G inter-frequency networking architecture based on cell-free technology, and proposes a real-time adjustment method for the network architecture, which combines both distributed and centralized processing to achieve dynamic on-demand adjustment.

A decentralized power distribution network consisting of smart microgrids introduces opportunities to trade with energy called transactive energy. However, research studies in the existing literature suggest that several standardized information models for TE do not meet the network architecture’s reliability, flexibility, and security requirements. This limitation is mainly due to the static nature of traditional IP infrastructure. To achieve these requirements in the network architecture, this study investigates the optimized application of software-defined network architecture for transactive energy in smart microgrid systems. Through literature research, unique design approaches in an SDN architecture are identified that improve the reliability, flexibility, and security of the SDN architecture. These design approaches include a decentralized controller network layout, redundant link configuration, a mesh network topology, and data encryption. The proposed solution uniquely combines these design approaches into a single optimized SDN solution for TESMS. To validate the improvements of the findings from the literature research, each design approach is simulated in this study using Mininet SDN emulator and AnyLogic system simulation software. The proposed solution is then applied to a use-case scenario that shows the improvements required for TESMS. The use-case scenario shows significant improvement in the data path uptime. An improvement of 0.27% is achieved, which equates to a 2 h per month increase in the data path uptime. The results of the simulation show that the proposed SDN architecture improves the reliability and flexibility of a traditional SDN network. Furthermore, enabling encryption between the nodes improves the security of the SDN architecture.

This article describes how the named data networking (NDN) has recently received a lot of attention as a potential information-centric networking (ICN) architecture for the future Internet. The NDN paradigm has a great potential to efficiently address and solve the current seminal IP-based IoT architecture issues and requirements. NDN can be used with different sets of caching algorithms and caching replacement policies. The authors investigate the most suitable combination of these two features to be implemented in an IoT environment. For this purpose, the authors first reviewed the current research and development progress in ICN, then they conduct a qualitative comparative study of the relevant ICN proposals and discuss the suitability of the NDN as a promising architecture for IoT. Finally, they evaluate the performance of NDN in an IoT environment with different caching algorithms and replacement policies. The obtained results show that the consumer-cache caching algorithm used with the Random Replacement (RR) policy significantly improve NDN content validity in an IoT environment.

In this paper, we study the source mobility problem that exists in the current named data networking (NDN) architecture and propose a proxy-based mobility support approach named PMNDN to overcome the problem. PMNDN proposes using a proxy to efficiently manage source mobility. Besides, functionalities of the NDN access routers are extended to track the mobility status of a source and signal Proxy about a handoff event. With this design, a mobile source does not need to participate in handoff signaling which reduces the consumption of limited wireless bandwidth. PMNDN also features an ID that is structurally similar to the content name so that routing scalability of NDN architecture is maintained and addressing efficiency of Interest packets is improved. We illustrate the performance advantages of our proposed solution by comparing the handoff performance of the mobility support approaches with that in NDN architecture and current Internet architecture via analytical and simulation investigation. We show that PMNDN offers lower handoff cost, shorter handoff latency, and less packet losses during the handoff process.

NDN (Named Data Networking) as one approach of the Content-Centric Networking (CCN) architecture, proposed by Jacobson, 2006, conceptually, has some advantages compares to the current Internet technology which build based on host-to-host TCP/IP protocol stack. However, technically, we have to examine the NDN approach, beside to prove the concept, also to get as much as able the opportunities of improvement the concept before implementation stage. In this work, it has been compared two kinds of cache replacement policy. The policies that compared are the Least Recency Used (LRU) and Least Recency/Frequency Used (LRFU). In the first stage both of these policies implemented and then the performance comparison has been investigated. Based on the experiment, the LRFU policy outperform LRU policy with a limited cache size. As a consequence the LRFU has a time complexity higher than LRU. Finally, based on the simulation can be concluded that LRFU should be considered as cache replacement strategy on NDN instead of basic NDN cache policy, named as caching everything everywhere (CEE)

As a leading architecture of Information-Centric Networking (ICN), Named Data Networking (NDN) plays an important role in the future network construction. NDN retrieves and identifies a data packet according to the packet's name instead of its IP address. Conventional protocols of TCP/IP Internet are unsuitable for NDN. Therefore, Named-data Link State Routing protocol (NLSR) is proposed as an intra-domain routing protocol for NDN. Although NLSR applies a five-layer trust model to guarantee its data security, there are still a lot of security issues in its data access mechanism, such as the fake and leakage of data. In this paper, we apply Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) to formalize this mechanism. Using Process Analysis Toolkit (PAT), we verify four properties, including deadlock freedom, data availability, data security and data decryption. According to the verification results, the trust model cannot protect the data from fake and leakage once intruders appear. We adopt a method similar to digital signature in the first improved model. However, the process of obtaining keys still needs to be executed multiple times during the verification of a data packet. To further accelerate the key fetching and verification process, all the keys, needed to validate a data packet, are packaged in a special packet of the second improvement.

Named data networking (NDN) has been considered as a promising networking architecture for vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). However, interest forwarding in NDN suffers severe issues in vehicular environment. Broadcast storms result in much packet loss and huge transmission overhead. Also, link disconnection caused by highly dynamic topology leads to low packet delivery ratio and extreme long delay in data retrieval. Thus, an efficient NDN forwarding strategy to retrieve data is urgently required. In this paper, we propose the density-aware delay-tolerant (DADT) interest forwarding strategy to retrieve traffic data in vehicular NDN. DADT specifically addresses data retrieval during network disruptions using delay tolerant networking (DTN). It makes retransmission decisions based on directional network density. Also, DADT mitigates broadcast storms by using a rebroadcast deferring timer. We compared DADT against other strategies through simulation and the results show that it can achieve a higher satisfaction ratio while maintaining low transmission overhead.

This paper highlights the benefits of information-centric networking (ICN) and its named data networking (NDN) architecture for future edge computing applications in a multi-tenant multi-stakeholder ecosystem. We consider an exemplary scenario of autonomous driving to discuss open issues for efficient and timely distributed compute-centric networking. We discuss what NDN has to offer for efficient and resilient edge computing, and what needs to be done to augment NDN to move from an information-centric architecture to a compute-centric architecture. Based on the autonomous driving scenario, we identify security, naming, networking challenges, and discuss the different options to tackle these challenges and propose potential solutions.

Named Data Networking (NDN) presents strong bandwidth benefits on edge networks because its in-network caching design is probably fit for popularity and locality. However, separate NDN edge regions cannot be efficiently connected over IP backbone world, slowing down the deployment of NDN edges. Due to the difference of stateful NDN and stateless IP in forwarding principles, the coexistence of two protocols is difficult and challenging in the network layer. In this paper, we propose iGate, an NDN gateway design for tunneling over IP world, to bridge two kinds of protocols in the same layer. iGate translates protocols between stateful NDN and stateless IP by two temporary tables. It considers many factors about gateway efficiency, like table tunning, minimal NDN integration, TCP/UDP alternatives. We evaluate the performance of iGate with a real implementation on Linux and the results show that it can achieve more than 85.03% translation efficiency and less than 29% protocol conversion delay compared with IP VPN which uses the typical tunneling technology over IP network. Our work presents a practical and highly-efficient solution to assemble NDN edges into IP world, and can be applied to other similar Information-Centric Networking (ICN) designs.
